That is one amazing pressing!!!
Get it if you can. Some of these 90 pressing sound compressed. This is not the case. Sound is explosive -
My copy clearly has RL in the matrix on A side, B side as this elongated A. Matrix fits perfectly otherwise.
-
I have this one and the 2009 MOV. While the 2009 MOV sounds fine and was made with the original US plates, this 92 European one sounds significantly better.

Recently picked this up, and my copy matches the picture exactly - an “A” that maybe looks like RL on the A side, and an “A” that is clearly an A on the B side.
I’ve been collecting RL presses for a bit now, and have heard quite a few of them. A few that stand out - Rush Moving Pictures, Zeppelin Houses of the Holy, The Police Synchronicity, AC/DC Back in Black & For Those About To Rock, Bowie Let’s Dance, ZZ Top Eliminator, and The Band Stage Fright.
Whether the etching is an RL or not, it sounds like an RL to me. This is obviously a much heavier album than any of those, but the sound is similar - most similar to the AC/DC presses, but with more low end.
One way or another, I also have the 20th anniversary press, and hearing that side by side with this, it’s like an entirely different album. The amount of detail, the soundstage, the dynamics - everything you want from a top notch record, it’s here. The bass guitar in particular sounds like it’s in the room.
I always said I was going to hold out for the US press, but when a top condition version of this popped up for a good price, I jumped on it. And, unless I find a deal on a US pressing I can’t refuse, I’m gonna stick with this one for the long haul.
Side note, if you’re a Ludwig fan, and you like Rush, his cut of Moving Pictures is the only one I’ve heard that I’d say is maybe better than this. Big as a house. And, way cheaper. -
To add some more info, I have a first EU press. The etching on side A looks very much like the "A" from the second photo of the release. The strangely shaped A in the last photo of the release is also present, but on side 2.
I'm pretty certain the "A" variant is just a badly etched RL. It looks exactly like the etched RL we see on the other photo, just missing the tail of the L at the end of the etching.
What's more, it's clearly written on the inner sleeve, at least the one with the cut-out lid, that the album was mastered by Bob Ludwig. Hope this helps... -
Edited 2 years agoLike someone else here said, a lot of specualtions here, so let’s speculate some more! Is it possible that the etched RL (variant 1) and the A (variant 2) is in fact both RL.. or are both an A? Check the pic ed here, does that say RL or A, that’s actually not easy to tell.

So, I’ve heard two of the variants. I’ve heard the US original and it hits hard. Just picked up the Euro non RL variant 2 version of this album aka Holland version and it still sounds great. It lacks a little less punch and is not as crisp but this still sounds great. I use a 1978 Stereophonic setup (RadioShack) with 2012 AT-LP120 and a slightly upgraded AT stylus. It sounds great on my system. I can’t disagree that the US original hits harder but the Euro non RL is still crispy and sounds great contrary to what you may have heard. But, that’s also my opinion and everyone’s ear are different. ✌️

Edited 2 years agoI just purchased a non-RL press. While I prefer a true plate pressing, I won’t be upset if this is truly cut from a DAT of the original plates. I have no doubt it will still sound amazing…

Like someone commented, this pressing is a monster!
No joke, it includes one of the best cuts ever.
Morello's guitar parts hit you on the brain!
I have a strong VG copy, which still plays more than excellent.
I also had a chance to compare this pressing with the reissue of Vlado Meller's cut.
Unfortunately, Meller's cut does not reflect this beautiful album's soul. -
