Notes
Part of the live acoustic performance series "Unplugged" put out by MTV.
Recorded on April 10th, 1996 using Effanel Music Mobile Recording.
Introduction to track 4 "Sludge Factory" contains portions of "Enter Sandman" by Alice In Chains - MTV Unplugged is very similar, but with manufacturing code on the CD face inner ring, rather than under cat# at 6 o'clock.

Alice in Chains released Sap and Jar of Flies as "in-between" acoustic EPs, but neither were throwaways. Sap and Jar showcases songs that are as great without turning it up to "11" -- complex songwriting, signature countermelodies, and how about Ann Wilson and Chris Cornell? Here, Unplugged front loads a killer set with tracks from Sap (Brother, Got Me Wrong) and Jar (Nutshell, No Excuses), in the way they were meant to be heard, in an intimate setting, exactly as they were written and recorded. Heaven Beside You and Over Now were stripped-down in original form, lending both to the Unplugged format. As for heavier Alice jams, Jerry Cantrell is a master of minor keys and unexpected chord changes, making Unplugged a chance to hear musicality that might have been obscured by the original production. This is Alice at the height of their powers, despite the well-known fact that Layne was in bad shape for this show, and the taping turned into an all day affair when he could not get it together (see Sludge Factory). His sickness almost makes this album an even greater accomplishment. Stands with their best.

Any release from the slew of MTV Unplugged series is just a boring snore-a-thon for anyone that isn't intensely into the music of Alternative Rock from the 90's. Unfortunately, the performance by Alice in Chains is no different. There is nothing impressive about the conversion of their slamming and sludge covered rock songs into acoustic niceties. It's like seeing a busker play a whole AIC set, but instead the busker is AIC. No less dis-interesting, and I am glad this trend dipped in popularity soon after the turn of the millennium.

This recording is really subdued, the venue sounds small and (on the DVD) the stage is low lit and intimate. On the DVD they play to a pretty small audience, how did they get tickets? I would kill to go back in time and be there! You can tell the band are excited and having a good time and they make lots of jokes (both on the CD and DVD), but let's not forget this is Alice in Chains. The acoustic adaptations of their songs were amazing, I'm always floored how they took songs that were already masterpieces and rewrote them into a new set of masterpieces. The performance and singing was amazing. This has to be one of the top live recordings of all time. Layne's performance was a bit haunting!
