Notes
Early to mid eighties reissue with Capitol Records Pressing Plant, Jacksonville pressing variant as indicated by "O" stamped in runouts..
Inner sleeve with group photo, lyrics, and credits.
"Hungry Like The Wolf" is the "Night Version" mixed by Colin Thurston, most easily identified by 5:14 track timing, all other tracks on Side A are the so-called "US Mixes" remixed by David Kershenbaum. Remix credits had been added to the inner sleeve, compared to 2nd edition.
[Note on the different US releases of 'Rio':]
All 'Rio' lacquers, cut in-contract by TML and Precision Mastering, show a "Z" in the runout matrix and had been consecutively numbered.
Except Z-1 and Z-4, the numbering system counts A- and B-side lacquers separately and was used for all three album variants.
By these Z-numbers, the pressing plant, the album variant and the side of the record can be identified:
Capitol Records Pressing Plant, Winchester: Z2 (Var.1, B) / Z5 (Var.1, A) / Z6 (Var.1, B) / Z9 (Var.2, B) / Z10 (Var.3, B) / Z11 (Var.3, B) / Z15 (Var.2, A) / Z18 (Var.3, A) / Z19 (Var.3, A)

Recently obtained a copy of this press and and am quite happy with it. It is translucent. The mix is great. Top to bottom good balance from lows to highs. It's good stuff!

I think this one sounds wonderful. I was lucky to find a copy that looks to be VG+ at my local shop. I listened to it from front to back and I haven’t heard anything wrong with it. I haven’t heard the original mix from UK so I can’t compare it. If you should come across it I would recommend getting it. Two thumbs up from me!

I have owned a few different pressings of Rio. My copy of this pressing is NM-. This pressing is AMAZING and is the best copy I have heard in years of collecting, hands down. I m 50 yrs old and have played this album in one form or another hundreds, if not thousands of times. If you own this copy and are experiencing issues, I suggest a professional cleaning (VPI, ultrasonic, etc), or check your set up. No question, buy this one in clean, as close to mint as you can find and you will not be let down. I am playing on a Technics 1200GR (with Ortofon black LVB), Rotel amp, BW 603s, power conditioner, transparent audio cables, etc.

I recently bought a copy of this pressing with the following Matrix/Runout IDs:
Side One: ST-1-12211-Z20 #3 Precision O
Side Two: ST-2-12211-Z12 #1 Precision O
The Side One mixes were a surprise. They're not an improvement over the original mixes, they're just different. They don't seem as lush as the mixes I've been used to all these years. "Hold Back The Rain" sounds much fainter than the rest of tracks on that the side, I'm not sure what happened there. Side Two is in good form as the familiar mix I've known and loved for over 30 yrs, rich and detailed. -
Should the barcode be updated to 0 7777-12211-1 for consistency?
Also, I have 2 copies of the same Capitol/Tritec release.
COPY 1:
Side 1 Matrix /Runout: ST-1-12211-Z16 #4
Side 2 Matrix /Runout: ST-2-12211-Z12 (#5? very faint)
COPY 2:
Side 1 Matrix /Runout: ST-1-12211-Z20
Side 2 Matrix /Runout: ST-2-12211-Z8-RE1 #4
I can provide photos if necessary.
