Very lovely sounding version of this classic! Compared to the og and the Okasek remaster it has a tamed upper mid and a perceived slightly fuller bottom. Its cut notably lower as well.
My copy plays flat and quietly (essential with the low volume) but once you dial this up the naturalness and dynamics shine through and by taming a little upper mids its just so SMOOOOOOOOOOTH!!! It may come down to tastes but this is it for me.
I would say the Mofi sounds the best of the versions ive heard then, just like with Candy O. They have a silky smoothness that the Cars recordings truly benefit from. -
My copy keeps randomly jumping in volume during the verses on Cruiser. Is this a defect of this pressing or is it on the original recording too does anyone know? Have to agree with some people here too, this pressing is not very dynamic. Feels very subdued, hard to explain but basically no drive from it at all. Pity

Edited one year agoThis version sounds absolutely awful. LP was cut at low volume but turning up the volume doesn't help, still sounds extremely muffled.
I compared with the MFSL UDCD 788, which sounds excellent, not muffled at all. Mastering was done by the same person (Rob LoVerde). I also compared to the original US press (George Marino) which sounds phenomenal - dynamic, open and detailed. Even the original CD sounds better than this...

I’m not sure how anyone could claim this is not a good MoFi release. It’s cut at a lower volume…just turn it up and listen how dynamic and punchy this is. Top notch pressing.
-
You need to goose your volume up a bit, but once you do, this mastering gives up the goods big time!

I would describe the original as more shrill in parts and the Mofi has toned that down a bit and is slightly more pleasant to the ears. My repressing from 2022 which arrived today, did not include the Mofi advertising literature.

This is another Cars release from MoFi that is not great. The original pressing is much more dynamic. S/T, Candy-O and this one are Ok. MoFi's release of Heartbeat City is Great, that one is worth every penny. Two bad the other three did not get mastered the same.
-
Sound quality is a lot better than I expected seeing as this is the Cars release from MOFI that seems to get the most hate. It’s a lot better than Candy-O IMO & that has a more positive response generally on the forums. But sound is subjective to each listener of course. The recent green vinyl release is louder & does sound great - but I think I prefer the subtle clarity of sound on this.

This was cut at a low volume for some reason. This is not the best sounding MOFI I have heard, but I wouldn't call it bad. My OG copy has clicks/pops, but sounds much more alive than this one. It doesn't have that "In The Room" feel that I look for on a MOFI press.
