Edited 2 years agoThis mix is atrocious. It's incredibly unbalanced. I had listening fatigue after 3 songs. This could have been a great remix because the original album doesn't sound spectacular, but it sounds way better then this. Oh, and if you're going to remix a Dio album don't burry his vocals! What a waste.
Not even a Chris Bellman mastering could save this.
If you want the best sounding version find a US stamped "sterling" press. -
What a dull flat and too bright release it reily has no bottom end or punch and about the mix there is nothing special about it
Its still a compact mix its not that its opens up the sound or a beter seperation of indtruments very boring mix -
Edited 2 years agoI'm actually very happy with this release. I don't have an original to compare but I do have a german CD (https://www.discogs.sitioby.com/release/6615095-Dio-Holy-Diver) and an original "The Last In Line" LP, which was also mastered at sterling. In contrast to what many say here, I think this release sounds great. I get low frequencies very similar to what I get from my "The last In line" and the sound is way clearer and more balanced than the german CD. Just as a reference, I play the LPs with an AT-VM95ML stylus and an IFI ZEN phono on a pair of ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2. For the CD I used an Integrated amp Sprout 100, which people often refer to as bass-heavy.
The pressing quality on my copy is great and the discs are completely flat. I love the extended ending of the songs and the etching on side 4. I am just a bit disappointed that the cover art is such a departure from the iconic original one. However, if Rhino wasn't able to use the original one for some reason, I'm fine with this new cover instead of a low-res scan of the original. -
Edited 2 years agoI got lucky with mine and also got it for about $15; the remastering is pretty decent, and it's different than most as it has extended endings and such. I've always found it cool to hear more of a song like that.
The new commissioned art is nicely printed and the art itself looks nice. The original album art is of course gone, but it's replacement isn't as bad as most say it is.
Ultimately, I get music to listen to it - this is definitely not gonna sit on my shelf and collect dust. I wouldn't pay more than $35 for this pressing, but overall it's a pretty decent deal if you can find it for a fair price.
Now just to get a first or second pressing. :) -
I guess I got lucky with mine. Vinyl dead quiet and I love the mix myself as something different. Love the extended endings & the instruments have space between them. I find it very enjoyable q. I hope they do The Last In Line also.
Sounds great on my Audio Technica Microcline cart. -
Oh my what have they done to the classic cover art, one of the most notorious / best metal covers. Just...why? Also, based on the reviews of the audio here on Discogs and the very obvious price-gouging happening only weeks after its release, again --- why? I recently picked up a O.G. copy in Near Mint condition (or would be if not for one visible, but inaudible) scratch for a fraction of what people are charging for this *reissue*. Pro tip from somebody who's been buying records since the mid 80's: one of the finer points of record collecting is knowing when certain titles are better found not on the internet, but at your local, loyal record shop that cares more about putting tasty vinyl in customers' hands (and keeping their inventory *moving*, because stale inventory is bad for business). This was a huge seller, go out and find a first (or second) pressing, they're out there, although they may take a while to find one in great shape -- and stop feeding the madness. Including the "remastering on autopilot" ca$h-ins on the so-called vinyl "resurgence" madness...

Agree with others regarding the lack of bottom-end punch and over-the-top mids. Evil Eyes however is done correctly, obviously different source material was used. Still a decent press just need to adjust that bass level up.

Edited 2 years agoThis remix/remaster is not impressive. The vinyl quality was fine, heavy, flat, quiet, just lacking in content. One glaring error noticed (I can't imagine it was intentional) is an exceptionally loud burst of kick drum strikes just following the "Gypsy" guitar solo at the drum breaks, they're about as subtle as grenade, total nonsense work. Also, wasting a side on etching is not in the interest of the sound, so I guess that should've been a clue. A great album containing pinnacle content from all musical participants deserves a better sounding final product. The error I mentioned tells me no one was actively listening and autopilot is no way to cut a master.

Worst "Holy Diver" release so far. The second record is not flat, side C is almost impossible to play.
I am very disappointed. -
Well, while my pressing is pretty flat and quiet, I found this mastering to be unlistenable! The midrange is so forward and harsh, it hurts my ears. Meanwhile, the lower end is almost non-existent. Very disappointing especially since it was recorded, I believe, in analog.
