I when really getting into the routes of Hip- Hop & breakbeat, buying 'Super Disco Brake's Volume 3' from a second hand store. Must have been around 1986. There's one track on that compilation that will never leave me. I've had months by not sparing it a thought, & then BANG it's in my head so hard it feels like the absolute rhythm of life, even the very meaning of life...
That track is 'Bra'.
This whole LP is untouchable, with the addition of 'Dove' & 'The Message', plus all the music, its in a league of its own & stands up tall over many an early funk set for certain.
To learn some years later the band were formed in the UK was both a blessing and a huge surprise (this LP recorded in Soho, London); with 'Bra; always sounding to me like the most American music I could possibly imagine... (I mean this was an NYC corner/block/B-Boy CLASSIC) and to upgrade from my Paul Winley bootlegs to the real deal a defining moment on Discogs.
More holy than a holy grail, this is a sacred temple, one you will never fully leave. You will be blessed...
I hope in the near future to compare this pressing with the 'Alaska' 1st UK pressing (released a year later in 1973). For now I'll just say, I can't imagine a better pressing than this. A great source recording & mix- down complimented by a brilliant vinyl master. Every instrument in its correct field, loud & proud; bass/low's rich, detailed & deep / mid's bright & clear / high's a foot in the air above the speakers. And, very little background noise in the quiet ages. I am not sure what more you could hope for.
