This mastering/mix sounds different than the Kevin Gray cut. The KG cut has a bit more depth, is a bit wider, and a bit more low-end.

Edited one year agoThis one is good, but not the best. The definitive, in my opinion is the 2021 US/ Canada/ Europe 180g RE. NOT the target version and NOT the orange vinyl. This one has the best packaging if that’s your thing, and this one has KG and Cohearent’s name slapped on it if that’s what you’re into, but if you’re looking for the best mix and sound, it’s: https://www.discogs.sitioby.com/release/19528945-Marvin-Gaye-Whats-Going-On

Mine had no hype sticker - however the inner sleeve says 'Mastered by Kevin Gray, Cohearent Audio'. However all the other signs suggested it was the 'Lawrence Dunster' version.
We need a definitive statement on all the different versions.
Good bass but at the expense of some top end openness on the CD version. -
So how do you distinguish between this version and the KG, Is there a way of doing so without physically checking the deadwax?

Edited one year agoOk my story of this .... missed the first disatrous version the first time around which people were saying it was this and that not by KG and all this ... Then I waited and bought the day the so called second edition of this was released I bought it on Amazon yes Amazon and the sticker said KG name and was made at Precision in Canada. Played on 4 sides all flawless all of it ... Side 4 the only thing I wondered about was and believe that the mono singles were in fact taken from the mono 45 singles vinyl transfers done by Kevin Gray and probably would of sound worse if they were done by someone else ... Or maybe he did only the tapes for WGO ... I don't know there's no story to this .... But the big SIGH is I don't have to buy another copy of this ....Unless a big Tornado comes and takes me and Marvin into the stratosphere ... Oh yea the only bummer was no photos came with it ... Nice shiny cover that opens up and 2 records inside and that's it ... I heard the first edition had all this extra stuff that I grabbed from this site lol ... Christ it's been here the whole time I swore I saw just Dublin and GZ Media but here it is 5 stars down the page with the words GZ MEDIA AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH ... https://www.discogs.sitioby.com/release/22739588-Marvin-Gaye-Whats-Going-On

As Discogs just done a piece on 50th anniversary sounding great Decided to purchase this , wish I had done a little more research this is not the press you want , may as well have been pressed onto an old dustbin lid

Edited 2 years agoI for one really love the sound of this. Fantastic 'in-the-room' vocals and can pick out every instrument. Never heard the nimble bass in there before. Got so used to the CD I didn't know this record could sound this good! Impressed.

You know what? This sounds AWESOME. I don’t care about the “”controversy””, this is the best sounding version of this album I’ve ever heard, defo better than the 4xLP Abbey Road.
I don’t care who cut it as long as it is well done, and this is. Bought mine from my local Paris record shop, didn’t come with any sticker nor it was d as KG’s version. Was hoping for it when I heard the news but still wasn’t scammed or whatever. So hey, why not.
Seriously this is ridiculously good. But is KG’s version better? I don’t know but I’m really really amazed by this. So warm, so present, so detailed. Grab it if you can. -

For all you EU buyers out there. I've just ordered the US copy from Amazon.com for a good price including taxes and shipping. It's currently on offer for 29.99$. Let's hope it arrives in good condition as this is the only real way us EU citizens can acquire this super release for a sensible price.
