“Loose Caboose” sets the stage with drippy acid lines, underpinned with a modified bassline derived from the 70s pop rock hit “Fox on the Run” by Sweet. A basic break is made memorable by kicks emphasized with descending bass stabs. While these elements make for a decent mid-90s acid break, the track’s standout feature is the clever use of a train horn sample taken from Brad Miller’s ambient noise track “The Coast Daylights Ft. steam Locomotive No. 4449”. The sample is deftly chopped, just as much a central focus of the track as its groovy acid lines. The track reaches its most memorable moment when The Electroliners cut out the instrumental completely to play the full, unaltered steam engine sample as a midpoint interlude before segueing into a build-up for the final drop.

“Loose Caboose” was the definitive peak of west coast acid breaks. The train horn got people HYPED. The track was inescapable on the west coast, eventually making its way to the Florida scene. It sold 12,000 copies during its initial run, an astronomical number for an independent act in those days. In early 1996, “Loose Caboose” was licensed to XL Records for a UK release, further cementing it as an international underground hit. Acid-heavy remixes by Carl Cox, the Bassbin Twins, and many others circulated in the years following its release. While the train horn easily could've been an annoying gimmick, the track had a high enough replay value that it survived being overplayed to oblivion throughout the late 90s and remains a highly regarded representation of the west coast style to this day.

Absolute dance floor wrecker from coast to coast. Both the Basebin and the original mix slap as hard as Bas Rutten.

Now this is how you do a fu**ing breakbeat record ! None of the chopping the actual break into bits and pieces or just having one kick and a tom tom and trying to call it a break ! This has the full 16 bars (or however many it is) of the pattern of the beat how it was intended and origionaly played rolling and looped nicely. And the rest of the track serves to mess with your mind while being the perfect acompnyment for the beats. These kind of tracks seem to be so rare though and I don't understand why ?

This track was one of the biggest tunes in the LA scene back in 95. What a combination of bass, acid lines, breaks, and the train sample cut up to perfection. This was played by all the breaks DJ's and every track was heard at least once a night. As for breaks this is one of the most memorable tunes from the mid 90's and will always crush dancefloors. If you are into breaks this is a must have and if you've never heard this pick it up, you won't regret it..Big up Dan, Jim and Bassbin Twins for such a wicked pice of music.
