Edited 2 years agoExcellent set of covers, standouts are Jane's Addition's rolling triplet groove on Ripple, Burning Spear's reggae take on Estimated Prophet, and Yoakam's Truckin'. That said, it doesn't sound like any effort was made to master the mixes to vinyl so it comes off with that unfortunate flat 90's range. And while it's easy to see why - 15 tracks recorded by 14 artists in at least 14 studios would take some time to give proper vinyl mastering treatment - the best that can be said is that it's a double LP so at least the range didn't suffer even more. The end result is that this sounds better than a K-Tel compilation, but not so good as the CD.
I really dig this album and the mastering engineer is no rookie having done a great job of other Dead and Garcia releases. Will have to try a thorough cleaning and a few other things to see if I can pull better range from the vinyl, will update this if I do. -
