In case you haven't heard the good news:
In 2024 the 30th Anniversary Edition of ISDN came out on vinyl and cd. It has the tracks from both versions, and came up with a new track order for the last half. Yes the CD version had to be 2CD to fit it all. The record version is still 2xLP but now sides C and D have 5 tracks each. -
I was delighted to find a copy of the vinyl limited edition of ISDN in a used bin. It is definitely a nice package.
Unfortunately, as others have said, the pressing is terrible. I do not know who made the decision to cram 75+ minutes onto a single LP, but the results are that the LP has a high (not exaggerating) noise floor. When the music is loud, it's OK, but during even moderately quiet ages, be prepared for lots of hiss.
At the same time, this is the only legit way to get the alternate second half of the album on wax, so if you're a completist or just want to hear the alternate version of ISDN, you'll appreciate that aspect of it. What a shame that for the lovely packaging, this wasn't split into a double LP.

Such a shame its the worst sounding LP in my collection! It's so quiet and flat sounding, I so badly wish they had got this right...

The superiority of fsol is becoming painfully obvious as even I myself listen to this some twenty years on and genuinely wonder is there any other artist who even comes close to achieving the depth and intricacy that these guys did all those years ago.I think not.
Today, only are the likes of 'the caretaker' aka James Leyland Kirby or perhaps Keith Fullerton Whitman doing such forward thinking material.I would say that James Ferraro also deserves a distinct mention.I realise there may be more who deserve to be cited here,in such cases, please forgive my absent-mindedness. -
What a mindtrip! FSOL blends jazzy influences and tribal notes to produce mysterious moods, swamp atmospheres or frenetic urban soundscapes in one sitting. Yep, this is a great album -- in fact it probably only works as an album, not really as a collection of individual tracks.
What was going through Virgin's mind, though? Why release 75 minutes of music on _one_ slab of vinyl? This is likely the worst pressing you will ever come across, quiet and fragile. The subsequent 2xLP is bound to be just about better (still pushing nearly 20 minutes per side), but the tracklisting is different. Ah! well, the CD is probably where it is at; and it makes a lot of sense, since it should be heard as a unique piece, rather than several.
This one? For collectors only.
