I caught Maiden in 91 at The Fox Theater in St. Louis. Anthrax was opener. What a show. They had just worked in a new guitarist (name I cannot recall Lars maybe?) and he was spot on. I know this record captures them in 85, but it stands as a testament to what an incredible live act they are. I agree with mikeSF in that it's a bit heavy on the audience noise, but so was the concert! It's a well recorded document of one of the finest live metal bands ever.

I had the pleasure of seeing Maiden in the '80s, on Beast, Piece, and this one, 84/85. This two disc record realistically captures the experience of the World Slavery Tour, and sounds even better than I them.

I ran out and bought the record in '85, the week it was released, as if hoping to re-live the concert I had recently seen. I always enjoyed listening to it, however, these days with much better audio equipment, I can really appreciate the production nuances.

First, the band plays their asses off with exemplary skill and technique. There's a bit of tempo adrenaline runaway, but it's not a deal breaker. Bruce is in top form, as usual. He never lets his audience down.

The sound is marvelous. Making a live record is tough, and even tougher with two distorted guitars competing for the same audio space. Murray and Smith are well defined in the soundstage. Harris pokes out at all the right times, but his ubiquitous gallop is always there. Drums are beautifully mixed here, a real treat.

The audience level is quite high in the mix, but serves to convey the energy of a live show. Of course I would like to hear less, but then how would you know it's live?

This pressing is excellent. 4 stars. Recommended.

On my copy when you open the gatefold everything is upside down. It was obviously a printing error. Sounds f'n fantastic though on nice clean vinyl. Personally I think the vinyl blows away the poor video quality DVD.
