Reviews

Great album with clear sound, and mine’s flat. Byrd/Pepper are too dominant in the mix. Curious whether that’s a KG/cutting outcome or part of the tapes.
-
Found this used at a local store. Very reasonable price. Very glad to have snagged one. It sounds amazing. Very impressed with the pressing.

Edited 3 months agoThere's not much else I can honestly add here that all the other 4 or 5 stars reviews haven't already, this is a lovely "hard bop" jazz LP that keeps the same uptempo throughout on both sides(mostly).
Highs, mids and lows are all on point and play out smoothly there is some distortion on some of Byrd`s solos but only when he hits them really high notes.
The vinyl record is solidly flat with no ruff edges or surface noise, the center hole is perfectly punched so no swaying of my tonearm.
Recommended for all "jazz heads" hard bop etc.

WOW! This record is amazing!
I’ve been waiting for a long time to buy a repress, found at musicdirect. Didn’t want to pay flipper prices.
Totally worth the wait! Nice dynamics, up tempo and fat bass, good Instrument separation! -

Fun session! And I believe it’s Herbie’s first for Blue Note. But I get a bit of distortion on Byrd’s solos which can be hard on my ears at times. It reminds me of when Lee Morgan is too closely mic’d on Big Beat and gets distorted - though not quite as extreme.
-
Solid up tempo session brought to life here by the Tone Poet team. Sounds great and a perfect example that high quality records can be put out at a reasonable price without the cynical price gouging some other company’s business models revolve around.
-
Strange this was released so long after its inception. The playing is excellent - it's definitely Byrd's album, though. The majority of the set is up tempo, and they really all work well together. Great show.
-
Tone Poet reissues are nothing short of BRILLIANT!! Looking forward to buying more titles in the series.

Mine came with a couple of audible marks in the vinyl, but can't complain for the price. This is my 1st Tone Poet and I got very impressed by the packaging. The gatefold cover is unbelievable in person. Again, for the price.. You are getting more than what you should. Lets keep buying these while BN's marketing strategy keeps it alive.
Mastering is excellent. Byrd sounds awesome <3
