Edited 4 years agoI've owned this from the early 80s and have grown to love it more and more over the years. It's one of those records that just makes me so happy - from the first "ahh..!" it's just this perfect balance of riotous, odd, funky, catchy, clever, awkward and yet fluid. Perfectly (though very unconventionally) paced, it starts with a whole side of wonky Fela funk and gradually opens up and quietens down on side two to end on a strange low.
So many great things - Belew's unique guitar, the periodically missing notes of Weymouth's bass on Once In A Lifetime (Google for the story), the imitation of an unheard Joy Division (again, ask Google). This and Bush Of Ghosts are a perfectly odd couple that contain a universe of ideas. -
Edited 10 years agoDavid Byrne & his band were in the greatest shape , Brian Eno is ubiquitous , the production is second to none , many super guests marched over through the album , lyrics are sophisticatedly social-political & the music is so dense , intricate & layered , blending art punk & new wave , innovative electronics & ethnic-world elements . To sum up , that is a very , very unique album !!!
