I’ll it I don’t have any other copies to compare but I enjoy the lo-fi tone of the record. Definitely don’t pick it up if you want a full warm sound but I enjoy my copy.

I'm sitting down and comparing this release to the Kevin Shields analog remaster. My analysis: the 2003 obviously lacks the fidelity of the remaster, but manages to still be enjoyable in a different way. It's a lo-fi version of this album and I feel like that really works with this music honestly. The music landscape is flattened out, but because there is SO MUCH going on musically, it smears it into some smooth music-paste slipping out through my speaker-sphincters. So if you only want one copy, I'd recommend the all-analog, but if you love this album I feel like this version isn't without merit (as others have suggested).

Edited one year agoSteer clear of this lifeless, poor pressing. Get basically any other official pressing. You should be able to get a new copy for a reasonable price on the band's website or direct from Domino. This is a rip from a CD pressed onto vinyl.
For reference I have an original UK pressing, a Plain pressing, an original US CD pressing, and a 2018 AAA pressing so I have compared it to a few different releases. -

The wonderful neo-psychedelic dream pop sounds of MBV - & what a beautiful noise it is. A mash-up of trippy hypnotic drone-pop, grunge guitars & sonic goo - as if someone’s playing with the variable speed button on the tape machine, but deliberately. It all makes sense - melodic & symphonic, psychedelic & psycho-eerie - like swimming through a pool of sludgy raspberry jelly. Imagine the Cocteau Twins on acid.
Just bloody fabulous. -
Shields has denounced the version put out by Plain for Warner Brothers, basically calling it the bane of his existence in so many words. You want the pure analog copy put out by My Bloody Valentine in 2018 or pure analog copy put out by Domino in 2021. (There is a second version by Domino in 2021 that is a uncompressed digital filed committed to vinyl that was also overseen by Shields that has its merits.) Shields oversaw all three of these pressings and spent a huge amount of time and money creating the all analog iteration. The all analog pressing sounds three dimensional. No comparison to the other versions. If you only have the Plain version, you really haven't heard the album. Sorry. You can get a great new copy cheap from either Domino if you live in Europe or mybloodyvalentine.org if you live in the States for not much money. The versions from 2018 and 2021 are the best versions to own according to Kevin Shields and I agree. Avoid all colored versions as they are bootlegs. The Plain may be semi-official but it is atrocious if you know what the album is supposed to sound like.

My copy sounds good, crisp and clear with good separation and response. No noise. I’m usually not a fan of Plains offerings but I’ve had this release since it came out and plan to hold on to it until an original Creation pressings comes my way.

Edited 4 years agoI “fungus tested” this pressing through headphones and it ed with flying colors. I guess I got lucky. My copy is excellent.

This press is excellent. Don't listen to the negative reviews. Excellent packaging and the record quality is fantastic.
