Edited one year agoProbably the fakest live album ever, but the music’s good so whatever.
I just did a back to back with my OG (this one: https://www.discogs.sitioby.com/release/549948-Kool-The-Gang-Live-At-PJs ).
That’s in like G/G+ shape, mostly from scratches and dirt, there may or may not be some light groove wear. This one’s a strong VG.
I did side A of the og, side B of the Scorpio, with a conical stylus thru a pair of ATH-M40X cans.
OG has that classic “soft” presentation, that dares you to turn up the volume. You can tell the sounds would probably be pretty clear if the disc was nicer. It’s a solid listen, even though it’s coming through at the mercy of a hazy old LP, no major distortions though.
On to the Scorpio.
My hopes weren’t high, cause, ya know.. Scorpio..
But I was pleasantly surprised when dropping the needle. The music has a nice “softness” to it, and the horns cut through nicely as a sharper contrast. I wouldn’t call it super warm, but I wouldn’t call it cold either. Maybe a bit on the “kool” side.
Probably digital, but for what it is it’s surprisingly well done, sans the artwork. It’s got some ticks and pops but it tracks well, no distortions or defects. A bit of edge warp that DNAP.
I’d say I enjoyed both about equally. The OG for its slightly intoxicating mojo, the Scorpio for its fidelity. No clue what the source is, but it’s a pretty clean one. It’s not gonna knock your t*ts off, but it does occasionally stray into mild ear candy territory. A relative success from the dark ages of vinyl. -

Very good album of jazz funk with a latin touch! Early times of Kool and the Gang. Should be rediscovered. -
Just a review of the album itself. I enjoyed it a great deal but good lord the studio strings they added are so silly to me. I wish there was a tool to delete those things. Bill withers at Carnegie hall has some of that same issue. Only other thing is this album doesn’t feel live most of the time. Just a couple of things for those considering the purchase.

Pretty sure this release is from much earlier than 2012 - would have got my copy around 2005... same code in runout.

Has someone a DE-2010 mislabeled or misprint copy?. I mean the label says The Penguin instead of N.T. but N.T. is on the record! Not Mojo press.
