Notes
Since I Left You is the debut studio album by The Avalanches. They started recording in 1999 and had used the working title of Pablo's Cruise. The duo primarily worked with a Yamaha Promix 01 and Akai S2000 samplers.
Band's , Darren Seltmann and Robbie Chater, spent hours sampling music from vinyl records to create the songs on the album: Chater estimates that there are over 3,500 samples. After sampling and arranging, the pair would swap their tapes, listen to each other's ideas and expand on whatever they had heard. Despite working separately, both Chater and Seltmann had nearly identical studio set-ups.
The initial release date was going to be 11 September, however it was delayed due to issues with sample clearance for the 900 samples involved according to Billboard. On 27 November the album was issued in Australia with plans to have a world release in early 2001. The later release date outside Australia was due to additional sample clearances needed for international markets (in April for UK and in November 2001 for US).
The initial Australian release slightly differ from the next versions:
"Tonight May Have To Last Me All My Life" has been shortened to "Tonight".
"Radio" intro sampled from Wayne and Shuster's I Was a TV Addict has been shortened (from 4:52 to 4:22 long).
The spoken sample from the film "Midnight Run" (in "Diners Only"), and a guitar/strings sample (in the middle of "Little Journey") has been removed.

Guys, if you own a copy of this release, be careful with its original plastic sleeve. It is made of PVC, and I have the impression that mine began to outgass. I'm replacing it with something else. -
Edited 2 months agoI've had this copy from August 2016. Mine sounds great. I wonder (as it's still being pressed now 8 years later) if the later copies are not as good? Is it pressed from the same plate? With people saying it doesn't sound good?? Just a thought. -

I picked up a copy a few months back in Copenhagen. The shop was selling it as an "Original 2001 UK copy". I have this barcode, but I don't have the ™ after MIKE'S. So which pressing do I have? -

Edited 8 months agoI think this sounds great. I read the negative reviews and took a chance on a used copy. You never see this in shops. Majority of the “surface noise” is from the sampling, durr. And clean your records.

Sounds awful to me – very compressed and grainy, lacking punch and detail. Very disappointing when listening back-to-back with excellent pressings like the recent Boards of Canada reissues. -
My copy came with a speck of blue material smushed into track D1 that caused the record to skip. I was able to gently pry it off with a wooden toothpick, and it plays fine after that. Sharing in case anyone else encounters this. -

This copy kills the 2021/22 pressings, imo. Selling those and keeping this one for good. -
My copy has side C matrix of: XLLP 138 C1 DAMONT MIKE'S ™ - THE EXCHANGE (S.D) but in every other respect matches this entry and not any of the others listed under the master release. I got very excited thinking perhaps this would mean a very very early press including the original "Frontier Psychiatrist" but I don't *think* so? (I'm not great at telling the difference honestly!)
