While a fair bit of the mid-era Echospace material does not really stay in the memory this gem certainly does. I can only agree with the other reviewers that Foil in particular is sublime. Completely different from the initial classic Variant release, merging more with the Echospace longform studio sound of the time, but this one transcends.

Foil is a surreal work by Variant, the drop at 14:00 gets me every time. (9,5/10)

Can't stop listening to this, definitely the best work from HItchel and one of the most incredible release form echospace catalogue.
          what a trip!!!

I won't add any more adjectives, but this sublime album was driving me mad until I figured something out...

I rip my disks to WAV and stream them losslessly to my DAC. In the CD player, it was sheer perfection, but the WAV sounded overdriven and distorted. Turned out iTunes 'Sound Enhancer' was the problem: I disabled it, and no more distortion, and WAV = CD quality again. I suspect this album is engineered so close to maximum levels that iTunes' so-called 'Enhancer' tipped it over the edge into clipping...

Variant has brought forward a new directive into the sound of Echospace with these two perfectly balanced extended players. "Flux" is a near 60 minute opus which continuously ebbs and flows far beyond anything I've heard in his previous work. The last 20 minutes are spectacular, there's something surreal happening when those distant saxophones fall into the mix, brings this strange space age jazz element I wasn't expecting. Save the best for last with "Foil" which continually develops in an organic flow, I've played it over 20 times now and I still can't get over how beautiful this song is. One of the absolute finest releases from Variant and a trip worth taking again and again. Timeless.

This is absolutely superb!! I did not think that Variants previous albums The Setting Sun or Falling Stars could be sured but this double CD album has proved me wrong! This is on another level as far as I'm concerened. Deep, hypnotic, ever changing and ever evolving epic tracks that go on and on forever but I never get bored...I just want them to play forever. When this album ended I felt lost and bewildered, like I had been taken to another planet and then dropped back on earth with a massive bump and no apology!
Stunning work from Mr Hitchell & an absolutely emphatic 5/5.
Foil is my favourite from the two tracks but this is not to detract from the absolute quality of Flux! Both tracks are utter genius!! Buy this on sight.

By far the best Variant release yet.
