Demo sessions recorded in London, April 1967.
Opinions differ as to the purpose of the original sessions. Certainly they were demos, but Giorgio Gomelsky (who paid for the recordings and subsequently held onto the tapes) claims they were to be the basis of a proper album. Robert Wyatt re it differently, claiming that they were more in the nature of publisher's demos and that the majority weren't being seriously considered as material for the band to perform on stage.

referencing At The Beginning (LP, Album) CR 30014
Rather odd sleeve illustration depicting a line-up that never existed (Elton Dean/Daevid Allen/Mike Ratledge/Robert Wyatt). -
It's an interesting listen. Not mind blowing by any stretch.

Edited 4 months agoOn all versions of the album 'Jet Propelled Photographs' the actual duration of the track 'I should 've known' is 7'25''. On the compilations 'Man in a deaf corner' and 'Turns On (an early collection)' that same track (identical version) clocks in at 7'39''. What version has the correct original speed ? -

I've owned two copies of this record, and both skipped in precisely the same place - at the beginning of the second verse of "That's How Much I Need You Now". Manufacturing defect? -
Edited one year agoThis is the only Soft Machine album I own and it's probably going to stay that way. Their stoned mellow psych sound like on "Memories" is about my limit with these guys. I know I'm in the minority on not caring for the jazz fusion stuff that was soon to follow, but can't like it all. -

sound is awesome on this one ... i thought it might be almost like a boot but it is not. The sound is crisp and deep. Ace piece of soft machine is this one -
Has quality issues. Sticks in between tracks on second side. Exchanged and same problem with second copy. -

difficult to see them as demos, as there are so evoluted as songs et perfect par se. -
Awesome album. If you wanna hear Soft Machine with Daevid Allen, this is the album to get -
