Songwriting for this album began in 1987, but due to the suicide of vocalist Per "Dead" Ohlin and the murder of guitarist Øystein "Euronymous" Aarseth, the release was delayed until May 1994.
This is the band's only studio album to feature Aarseth and Varg "Count Grishnackh" Vikernes.
Vocalist Dead started to write the lyrics when he ed the band in 1988.
In 1990 studio versions of the songs "The Freezing Moon" and "Carnage" were recorded, appearing on the CBR Records compilation album Projections of a Stained Mind
Drummer, Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg, claimed that the lyrics of "Freezing Moon" were "meant to make people commit suicide".
Dead said in a 1989 interview by Marduk guitarist Morgan "Evil" Håkansson, published in Slayer fanzine, that by then he had written the lyrics for "Funeral Fog", "Freezing Moon", "Buried by Time and Dust" and "Pagan Fears"
Finished versions of these songs appeared on the album Live in Leipzig, a concert recording from November 1990 which was released in 1993.
It is considered one of the most influential black metal albums of all time.
In 2017, Rolling Stone ranked De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas as 40th on their list of 'The 100 Greatest Metal Albums of All Time.
The title De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas is a Latin phrase meaning "The Mysteries of the Lord Satan", with "Dom" being an abbreviation of "Dominis", often used as an honorific prefix for ecclesiastics of the Catholic Church.
The album cover is a monochrome photo of the east side of Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim, Norway.

Not a bad sounding pressing at all. It's black metal ffs,it's not like it needs to be MOFI. -
How does this sound in comparison to the BoB reissues? -
Edited 3 months agoExcellent sound and I really love that the drums are more present here and pretty thunderous, making this by far my favorite vessel to take this filthy darkness in. Probably my favorite Black Metal album of all time and it looks nice on my turntable too!
It's a goddamn shame that they overdid the original purple printing fad a tad too much - lyrics are provided in the gatefold, but you can't read shit - no contrast whatsoever. Same thing with cover and spine. A shame. Shame.
It looks like my copy too likes to warp. Plays good, but is starting to warp in vertical storage for some twisted satanic reason. Hopefully this cancer won't advance too much.

Really great set! The booklet and supplemental discs give you just about everything you would want to know about this legendary album's tumultuous journey from conception to final release and its lasting influence over the years. -
Mine came with a pretty hefty warp, but it plays through without any issues. It just looks a little weird on the platter.
The only downsides to this pressing is the artwork. You can barely read any of the text and the image on the front cover is also difficult to see, which is a shame, because the layout is cool. The pressing itself sounds great though and packs a real punch! -
I have a copy of this but with no barcode. Everything else (Matrix and SID code) matches exactly except it doesn't say "Recorded in The Grieg Memorial Hall in 92/93" anywhere, either. Any ideas? -
The remaster is out of this world, I really hope that it becomes more accessible soon. Beautiful book as well!

The best on this first version of the CD from 1994 is the missing of barcode on the backcover but it is bad that the wrong birthdate of Euronymous is mentioned.
