what a record! with mike hugg here on manfred mann his song- you’re a better man i - is a great version from the usually garage rock revisions we normally hear. very nice moody psychedelic jazz from the group!

This is hands down a great record. Odd, but great! A must have if you're into the genre.

Criminally underrated lp. For sure a stand out in my rock collection. Original, funky, soulful, spacy, etc. Great from front to back.

Unofficial But very good sound that I compared with the edition 1979 of the Bronze label.

A great album and excellent to see a repress but I'm not sure what happened in the remastering process as it sounds very bass heavy and not much treble. Consequently the horn arrangements on, for example, 'Travelling Lady' lack the power to blast through, the hi-hats are all but inaudible and the vocals sound muted. Its a real shame as its a great album from the time when jazz players were featuring on prog albums. Well worth having though and I recommend home EQing - crank the treble and mids and lower the bass to get a pretty good sound.

I discovered this album through the Polydor Canada compilation Rock, Soul, Blues Explosion, which opened my ears to a lot of new music. Probably would have found a lot of it from other channels, but I don't think I would have come across Chapter 3 elsewhere. There is something dated and maybe a bit corny about the doomy basement jazz-rock presented here, but hot damn if it doesn't create a mood. And that's what this album mainly is- a mood which feels very Californian but quite surprising for 1969 and for a band coming from England and for a band like Manfred Mann that was mainly recording pop hits before and pop-rock hits after as "Earth Band". This album is surely an "experimental" one for them, and by far the most interesting. And there is some good songwriting here too, from Travelling Lady, Sometimes, and Mister You're A Better Man Than I. An overlooked oddity that really deserves further attention.

I just played the Unofficial Vertigo vinyl on my system and it sounds great no complaints, I'm not saying its as good a release as the original pressing's as i hav'nt heard a first release but hey try and get a playable copy and a nice clean cover for a reasonable price ?? Regarding the music it's fantastic a couple of the old jazz'ers in there Huggs voice fits the sounds for me.
