Wow everyone is right, this does sound quite lo-fi.... like every other Dinosaur Jr. record. Almost like it's a part of their sound. Sounds deliciously Dino Jr'y and lo-fi to me. -
Came back to this after a couple of years to see if maybe I’d warmed to this recording. Really is the worst sounding album of the 1200 or so I own. Nothing to do with the pressing, everything to do with the production. I get that Mascis and Vile (who in my opinion is a bad choice of co-producer) were going for a Lo-fi sound, but this isn’t so much Lo-fi but just muffled and bad. A shame as the songs and performances are great. The other odd thing is that the vocals are recorded ok. But that just serves to make it sound like J and Lou are not in the same room as the band when on vocal duties. I thought, ok, maybe it’s made to play loud? Doesn’t really help. With Bug for example, the recording was pretty Lo-fi, but you cranked it and it kicked. Not here. It’s better, but not much.
So, the pressing is fine. Looks fantastic. But the mix is as flat and awful as others have said. -
Edited 2 years agowhile i concur with the majority sentiment about the instruments sounding muffled and the drums being "buried"; I still really enjoy listening to this press. Vocals for both J and Lou sound great; J's leads n solos pop and sound vintagy and awesome AND you can hear the bass. Its a strange mix but NOT bad. Add to that the songs are fucking spectacular (of the reunion albums in my top 3 with Beyond and Farm). and the color looks amazing. Sealed copies for 13 bucks? I say get it !

My copy is fine in regards to pressing quality. What I don't enjoy is the mix, the vocals and guitar solos are too upfront and the rhythm guitar is far back, so it doesn't sound like the classic Dinosaur Jr's "wall of sound". I guess my ears are too accustomed to their classic noisy approach. Maybe it was a stylistic choice for this particular album. Besides that, this album has some great tunes -

Clean pressing but the recording is lo-fi. Like who threw blankets over my speakers,? lo-fi. Hi-res streaming sounds the same. Good album but definitely not one you’d throw on your turntable to show off your system. -
Edited 3 years ago*EDIT* The first copy I got was so s**t sounding it's almost comical. The mixing is very bad (love the Posies but, J, please fire Agnello). On the upside, the "purple ripple" might be the most beautiful color vinyl I own.
Since others reported that theirs sounded fine, I decided to buy another copy, this time imported from the UK. Indeed, it has the same runout info, same color, UPC, everything. But it sounds BETTER (as in, not the best but a clear improvement) and I'm actually now enjoying the spin. It's crazy how different pressings from the same run can end up sounding. -

Songs are great. Sounds like shit. I'd be happy if Dinosaur stepped up their vinyl game. They are such great albums and deserve great mastering. This one is hard to listen to. -
I love this album but this pressing sounds like it was recorded in a bathtub 20,000 leagues under the sea. Apparently that's by design ... *shrugs*

Great record. Terrible sound.
Dino could benefit greatly with a new mixer and mastering facility.
The new live record sounds way better!!!
