Mastodon – Medium Rarities

My printing (pink) is completely unplayable. No matter where I place the needle, within thirty seconds it’s skipping. Horrible pressing and it seems like others have the same issues. Maybe skip this on vinyl and get a cd copy or digital. The album itself is worth it just for the Flaming Lips cover. Somehow mastodon made Spoonful Weighs A Ton their own and it’s amazing.

Mine came in today. Didn't need much cleaning at all. Plays great. No skip on Orion. Sounds good. Pink vinyl looks pretty cool.

A massively squandered opportunity that their cover of Thin Lizzy's "Emerald" didn't make the cut.

This album is a great opportunity missed. For me the live and instrumental versions are simple fillers. If I'm interested in live recordings I prefer full concert albums; instrumentals are interesting once, but that's it. They could have compiled a full CD (or even a double) with material that isn't available on albums or EPs: covers, B-sides, compilation/soundtrack-only songs, and those that were only available as -only lossy mp3-s on deluxe editions of albums (and which aren't available anymore on the websites!). Instead of truly interesting material 9 out of 16 tracks are instrumental/live editions.

I tend to avoid compilations, partly due to the fragmentary content, but also because the sonic variations are often jarring. I was quite surprised that I enjoyed this compilation then: the sound variations are not too extreme, and somehow it sort of hangs together. There's some background swooshing now and then on my marbled salmon pink vinyl, but nothing too distracting. It seems that Mastodon are strong enough to sound compelling even when they're just horsing around and throwing things together.

Solid collection of B-sides, live performances and instrumentals. Consider this the Bonus Features section of any Mastadon album you bought. Pink marble pressing plays great

Awesome pressing! Nice warm sound, no scratch on the 4th side.

I have bought two copies and they both have had a scratch on the D-side during Orion. So some of the Pink versions have a production error.
