Eric Dolphy – Out There

This CD sounds closest to the older vinyl 70s OJC pressings then the later CD remasters.

Flat pressing, clean. Crisp and clear, soundstage and separation great, bass and low end frequencies fit perfect in the mix. Can't find info on source material or who remastered it. 2019 reissue.

This is my favorite jazz album of all time. I only had it on a CD for decades. I bought this during a trip to London (I'm from Israel), I was shocked and amazed to see Eric Dolphy on display shelves at HMV (nothing like that at home, certainly not in 2014). Then, I got home, and when I heard Serene, it was the only time in my life I was bummed out to hear Jackie Byard. Thanks to DOL, my favorite album now exists as the most hated LP in my collection. Nice job.

Nice thick , UK vintage , virgin vinyl ( a lot of the early US pressings of this album used recycled vinyl) .
The sound is incredible , full of clarity and punch , beats my Analogue Productions version although that's very good . You really can hear the freshness of the tape on this . Unbelievable . Just a shame they're so hard to find .

Flat vinyl. Great music but a series of loud pops on B2 persist after ultrasonic cleaning. Will request a replacement.

Don’t know the providence of this pressing. Mine is sublime. That is for sound, vinyl quality, and flat pressing.

This sounds extraordinary. There must be some reverb too, because the space sounds large and cavernous.

Generally speaking, Dolphy's instrument comes out of the left channel (he plays several different instruments on this album), the bass seems to come out of the middle, while the drums and cello come out of the right channel. Every instruments is powerfully rendered, with no distortion. Dolphy sounds right there in your left channel. You could say they sound like the group is in the room with you, but with the reverb, that's a big room.

Overall, this is excellent. 5+

This is maybe one of the best German OJCs from the Mikulski era. Go for it, if it ever turns up.

The initials GH in the deadwax confirms it was mastered from analogue tape by George Horn (edit - GH actually refers to Gary Hobish, mastering engineer at Fantasy until 1986). OJC reissues up to ~1986 were almost all analogue-sourced. I'm sure info like this is scattered throughout other OJC listings on Discogs, but this is the only one I have. Can confirm that this sounds fantastic for a budget jazz pressing, and would certainly seek out other 80s-era OJC pressings.
