So it's a "color test pressing" for their 2002 debut, and yet has labels for Sides A and B of 2007's Colors? What's up with that? -

my copy sounds really good, nice loud bass and tons of layers. Did need a little bit of a trebel EQ boost on my set up, but barely. beautiful pressing. -
Disappointed by how this was pressed and mastered. I ordered silent circus, Alaska, and colors all at once. Silent circus and colors had very badly seam rips along the top.
I've only listened to colors because I was curious and concerned how they split up the tracks. Sadly this works way better on cd or digital. I hate how the tracks just end abruptly. -

my copy sounds great. shame about the remastered cover art though. -

I was really looking forward to listening to this but much to my dismay, it does not sound great. Can anyone corroborate any of the following? I'm really hoping I just got a lemon of a bad press.
(P.S.: ATLP120XUSB with internal preamp running through an Aiwa stereo receiver from 20 years ago, ive speakers.)
[EDIT: I traced a whirring sound to my setup that I had previously attributed to the pressing. Removed for accuracy.]
Noticeable warble on the guitars right before the first "A spaceman" bridge of "Sun of Nothing". Also present during the bass chords in the intro of "Viridian". I'm not sure if this is an issue with the vinyl or if it was a conscious decision for the remaster.
This may be more of a complaint about the remaster as well, but Briggs's bass feels less prominent overall than on the original. This is particularly noticeable on tracks like "Informal Gluttony" where it originally took center stage. But hey the synth on "Ants of the Sky" is more prominently mixed, though the banjo is almost inaudible on the breakdown.
Occasional crackles/pops throughout.
I probably wouldn't have noticed it if not for other reviewers mentioning this of the 2017 remaster (also from Craft Recordings), but it seems like the hole may be slightly off-center. It looked like the cartridge was wavering back and forth very slightly while in the runout groove before I flipped it.
Last, and probably most importantly, the whole thing feel extremely compressed. Where tracks like "Prequel to the Sequel" originally felt like massive 3D soundscapes, they now feel somewhat two-dimensional. If I hadn't known the scream on the intro right before the first verse starts was there I might have missed it entirely. It gets worse as the first dual-vocal section starts, with the low growls also being pretty soft in the mix (and not to their benefit, in my opinion).
These may all be complaints with the remaster versus with the vinyl pressing. I held off on listening to the remaster until my vinyl came so I don't have a barometer to compare to of what the digital version of the remaster sounds like. This may be a flawless pressing of a mediocre remaster. I thought some of these complaints may be because my speakers are poor so I played it through a pair of 250 ohm DT770 Pro headphones and it was somehow worse. It felt like there was almost NO bass response.
All in all, I'm happy to the band, especially since I know they can't tour due to COVID. I'd rather have this vinyl than no vinyl copy of this album. If you're looking for an excuse to toss them some money (and you should be! your favorite artists!) and you don't yet have a copy of this legendary album, this is a good excuse. If you're reading this review five years down the road and looking to pick up a second-hand copy, I would say avoid this pressing—and I would advise caution when considering ANY Craft Recordings pressings after some of the other reviews I've read. -
Edited 4 years agoI was a little scared to get this one based off comments, but it was the only one available to me when I purchased for a decent price so I went for it and my copy arrived in great condition. No damage, no off center holes, little to no noise, side D was fine. I don't have a high end setup at all so I can't really discern specifics, but I will say that it's one of the loudest and clearest sounding records I have.
My only gripe about this album is that the songs literally abruptly stop on one side and then abruptly start on the other sides. I thought maybe they could have arranged it especially for the records but I don't know what else they could have done since every song pretty much flows right into each other. I feel like there are better/quieter parts of each song from A to B/C to D where it could have been cut to make the transition seem less harsh. For example, at the end of Sun of Nothing and the beginning of Ants of the Sky, Tommy's vocals kick in and the vocals are split across both tracks which on cd and/or digital it's fine since it just flows. However, with there only being like a second or two of vocals on Sun of Nothing, it's just a harsh ending. I feel like they could have just cut Sun of Nothing off before the vocals started and just threw the vocals at the beginning of side C which is Ants. The way it plays out on record is you'll hear the vocals at the end of Nothing for literally a second and then stops. -
this is probably the worst "vinyl remaster" i've ever heard. I thought it was just my copy but this thing hisses and sounds crushed to shit. not just me. skip.

Edited 5 years agoSo I got this signed by all the band on their recent LatAm mini-tour, but I wasn't really excited to listen to this because of the negative comments. But this pressing didn't disappoint. The vinyl did have some minor scuffs but nothing too distracting, and the record itself is flat. Also, I didn't have any problems with the run-out grooves.
To my ears this remaster sounded slightly better than the original mix. I think the keyboards/synths sound more upfront, and also the "cantina" section in Ants of the Sky is mixed louder (which I didn't like), but I can't be really sure about that. I also had to adjust my sound settings because I felt the record was slightly bass-shy. The packaging feels cheap sadly, but overall I think if you are a fan of this record, you should get this. Play it loud!
