Notes
The UK original issue of this was on the Roger Dean designed ("Gemini" and lizard, Virgin logo) colour label. A black & white version exists in , and in the UK apparently only as a "promotion - not for sale" issue. UK original issues came in a red printed poly-paper inner sleeve (at first) and then a black printed inner sleeve, with the Virgin Records logo and Vernon Street address (some later inners didn't have the address). Plain paper inners came later with a variety of other label designs.
From tangerinedreammusic.com:
"This is the first Tangerine Dream album to feature their now classic sequencer-driven sound, which later became known as their trademark and of the so called Berlin School genre.
Recorded during November 1973 at The Manor in Shipton-on-Cherwell, England and released in February 1974 on Virgin Records, the album marked the beginning of the group's international success. The title originates from the Greek myth of Phaedra, the daughter of Minos and Ariadne's sister. She committed suicide after her stepson refused her advances.
“Phaedra was recorded under extremely trying circumstances ("Technically, everything that could go wrong did go wrong," TD founder Edgar Froese later recalled), the results were stunning, especially the 17-minute headtrip title cut, which layered an accidentally recorded Moog synth track with flute, Mellotron, bass sequencer and white noise — an additional sense of interstellar drift was created by the Moog's oscillators, which lost their tuning as the machine heated up. Challenging, otherworldly and almost indescribably beautiful, Phaedra exerted a massive influence on ambient and electronic artists for decades after its release.”

I haven't compared it to others, but this seems to be a great pressing. A little bit of surface noise, but it probably just needs a cleaning. Perfect otherwise.. I'm really glad i added this one to my collection. -

#TangerineDreamTuesday Week 5: PHAEDRA.
Wow. What can be said about Phaedra that hasn't already been said? Tangerine Dream's first album on Virgin Records, and their most famous...
Phaedra is an incredible album, especially given the struggles to make it. Recorded at Virgin's studio The Manor, TD grappled with equipment failure, power cuts and their temperamental new Moog, which would shift in pitch as it warmed up. "Mysterious Semblance..." was their first breakthrough, a piece by Edgar and Monique Froese on double-keyboard Mellotron, and the rest of the tracks soon followed: "Phaedra" showcasing their Moog Modular, working in tandem with their existing synths to create a journey through a landscape of sound; "Movements Of A Visionary", built on a hypnotic backbone of pulsating synths; and "Sequent C'", a final flute coda by Baumann alone.
Phaedra was the first TD album to break into the charts (reaching No. 15 in the UK) and thus became most listeners' first exposure to TD, earning them a solid international fanbase through the Virgin Years. Although having gotten into TD a few decades later, I ended up following a similar path with Phaedra as my first album, and I really can't think of a better introduction to the group. A landmark release in electronic music that, fifty-one years on, remains stunningly brilliant. -
On the 1995 release, the children's voices at the end of the track, 'Phaedra', have mistakenly been added to the opening of 'Semblance at the Strand of Nightmares'. Has that been rectified on this reissue ? Thank you

Speciifically regarding the unreleased material....Wow! MY 55 year old body just time traveled back into my 15 year old heart. Each of these sounds was like seeing a new color. THAT'S how it was back then. -

How much would my original pressing be worth in Mint condition? -

You just want to hurdle through space while listening to this! Classic. The 2019 remaster is a big improvement. Glad I got to see them in concert (Radio City 1988). RIP Edgar. -

Happy birthday PHAEDRA ... 50 years and one month today! I'm a late encounter of TD, although I was many years aware of their work. I dived deeper with the two boxes of CDs with their virgin years. Phaedra really is outstanding, the sequences, the choirs ... this is the first side of the medal of electronic music, with the other side being AUTOBAHN by Kraftwerk, also from 1974. So, what about the coin edge ... I leave that one for you! -
