I don't recognise it but I'd like to know what it is too. Very nice Balearic deep house. It does sound a bit like some of the tracks on an Open Spaces LP that came out on City Limits Records in 1990 but I'm not convinced it's them.

To me, it sounded like Frankie was introducing someone from "New York City" as the next act after him...

Upon reviewing the Dance Energy 89 flyer, we can conclude that "Inner City" was the only artist/group from the lineup that traveled to the rave from the United States (main band member, Kevin Saunderson, originally from NYC).

That being said... we must now Inner City (Kevin Saunderson) in order to get some hints on what this track might be.

It actually sounds very Italian to me. Like a more downtempo/ambient version of an early italo house track without the typical honky tonky piano bashing keys, such as on Discomagic or DFC. Very familiar chords. Sorry I can't help more. Nice track anyway.

  • Show this post
A record produced by Kevin Saunderson in 1996, features a similar lead as the unknown track:

Various – True People: The Detroit Techno Album
    React – REACTCD71
    Kevin Saunderson - E-Dancer

Sorry not hearing the similarity there at all.

Hearing a fair few Italian records of this time (89-91) it sounds 100% italian to me.

  • Show this post
Oh and one other thing - would take the flyer content with a very large handful of salt. The DJs on it may not be correct.

  • Nick_G edited over 7 years ago
Open Spaces were Italian ;-) City Limits was a New York label so if Frankie Bones was playing it it would make sense.

This track from that LP I mentioned previously has a similar sound, if more uptempo:

    Sunrise Paradise Garage

There's a track on that LP called 'Sunrise Exercise' which isn't on Youtube, but I'd be curious to hear it just in case.

Any more leads would be appreciated as I think a few of us would like to know what this is. It doesn't help that 'Balearic' doesn't seem to be listed as a style when searching on the 'Ogs.

    Sunrise Exercise

That one aint the one in the vid OP is looking for, Sunrise Exercise is somehow a sort of Chime clone and similar to Sunrise Paradise Garage.

  • Show this post
OK thanks for that. I do hearing tracks off that LP years ago though and the style was a bit similar.

I've tried looking through Italian downtempo/deep house tracks from 1989 but have drawn a blank.

  • Show this post
The background chords sounds like that awful, awful guitar / piano balearic italo house tune from 1989 that was big a the time. Even charted IIRC, I've forgotten what it's called - BUT a much, much better more downtempo version of it. Still sounds like something on DFC to me.

100% agree. The K.Saunderson example the OP posted sounds nothing like the track ID, I mean nothing!

  • dj_firewire edited over 7 years ago
I know it doesn't sound anything like it, except the main lead---it has some similarities. I figured that it's possible Kevin Saunderson was interested in such a sound. It was a reoccurring synth sound most commonly heard in the late 80s.

I think you might be going down the wrong path. I think Frankie was just saying he was getting off the mixer and who he was and that he was from "New York City".

The track sounds very European as well. I'm not sure if anyone from New York would've played a track like that in 1989.

  • Show this post
One in the comments section mentioned the similarity to Mr. Monday's Keep On/Don't Stop. Sounds sort of similar, but the mixes on YouTube don't seem to match exactly the audio in the mix. The only one I couldn't find audio for was the Dub Mix as mentioned by the YouTube .

The flyer for the rave says Judge Jules was one of the DJs. He seems to be involved in a few Mr. Monday productions, so that might be a lead...

^You might be onto something also.

By the way, just for the record (no pun intended) - I am highly aware that there is an Italian feel to the track. (In case some of you thought I was retarded... I'm not.)

I just wanted to go the Kevin Saunderson route first.. before I started researching the European producers. But I'm now scouting the Italian house world... checking out tracks from the 90s Italian disco-ambient-downtempo house records.

I have to it you might have a point , i would rather hear this from the DJ's themselves however because this makes absolutely sure, otherwise we are just going on ideas and not fact unfortunately, Its funny one of the most powerful tunes I hear from this Rave is one of the ones to go underground - You would think it would be used so much all the Old Skool DJ's would know off the top of their head, its so simplisticly powerful. I don't see the point that the wanted track is definitely italian and from the late 80s. Maybe we have to widen our point of view.

Eddie Evil Richards played some hi nrg disco stuff from the early and mid 80s at the event too so maybe we have to enlarge our focus on the whole 80s era?

I don't think that it has something to do with it but the intro of our wanted track sounds somehow similar to some soundtrack work of Jan Hammer for the early Miami Vice shows.

Furthermore check out this track: Art of Noise - Camilla (1986). It sounds somehow similiar and has also that kind of laid back vibe.
