Records:
I follow the Discogs rating system as that is the platform we use to buy/sell, but have my own opinions like everyone else about what meets certain guidelines. This said I tend to grade strictly as my stylus picks up wear and dirt noise easily it seems. I will lay out my grading method here in detail. (M) a sealed record. nothing less (NM or M-) As it says, a nearly perfect record. This would be like opening the sealed record. Now it is NM, maybe a few plays but otherwise a pristine record. There should be no/minimal noise or pops, and certainly no visible wear. Personally I don't use unless it is played once new record. (EX or VG+) Glossy, used record that has been taken good care of. Minimal to light visible wear. No more than 5 loud pops per side, or an occasional light crackle. No loud pops and light crackle together, or any detectable groove wear or other noise that is persistent. (VG) An average condition record, will play great but with persistent crackle throughout with many louder pops. Light to moderate visual wear, can have a few feelable scratches and noticeable groove wear/graying. Groove wear will not overpower the music in loud parts and surface crackle will not again overpower music in the louder parts. No skips or hangups. (G+ to G) A heavily used record or one with a significant scratch or other problem with playback. Moderate to heavy visual wear, with several long, deep scratches or heavy scuffing, and severe groove wear are all parts of a record in G+ condition. Not for playback generally unless it's just a skip on a clean record or with a heavy wear record using a pop and click removal tool or the original mastering is hot. (F) For collecting only, not for playback
Jackets:
For jackets I also follow the scale here on Discogs related to grading with (M) still being sealed (NM or M-) is still in shrink with no visible wear (VG+) can also be in shrink or out, with some dirt and fingerprints, a few small creases. Generally light visible wear with no ring wear or loss of artwork and no to light edge or shelf wear (VG) Will show average jacket wear with bent or soft corners, light to moderate ring wear to the artwork and light to moderate edge or shelf wear. Will still display well with no major seam splits or structural damage to the jacket. (G+) The jacket will still hold and protect the record safely, but there are major seam splits or unglued seams and moderate to severe ring wear and edge or shelf wear, resulting in loss of artwork, and the edge of the record being exposed. (F) Will no longer protect or hold the record, record falls out or is exposed or other severe structural flaw.
