Primal thrash – one of Sodom’s top releases
Released in 2001, M-16 is the tenth album by ’s Sodom (eleventh if you count their debut EP IN THE SIGN OF EVIL from 1985). It marked seventeen years of releasing albums for Tom Angelripper & crew. Their style here is reminiscent of Bathory’s thrashier material, like 1988’s BLOOD FIRE DEATH. The lead solos particularly recall Quorthon’s licks. It’s amazing what a full sound just three guys can make!
M-16 is such a well-done, energetic disc; it’s great for when you’re jogging or working out. “Among the Weirdcong” is a great opening track with its marchin’ intro. “Napalm in the Morning” brings to mind the aforementioned BLOOD FIRE DEATH. “Genocide” has a simple yet muscular main riff followed by the kick-axx thrash/death metal of “Little Boy.” The catchy title track is another fave while “Lead Injection” has an interesting extended intro before seguing into ultra-thrash and features a cool breakdown in the second half. “Marines” is thematically cheesy, but infectious.
The album closes with “Surfin’ Bird,” an amusing cover of The Trashmen song. The version I have includes two bonus demos from 1982-1983 of “Witching Metal” and “Devils Attack” respectively, but the sound quality is horrible. They’re important for historical reasons, but otherwise pretty worthless.
