Edited 7 years agoDaring on the surface, "I'm Breathless" is an odd mess, its 30s swing/jazzy arrangements add too much late 80s plastic, re-adapting into self-parody. With a few tiny stand out moments (the Porter-esque "Sooner Or Later", "Something To " and the beautiful duet with Mandy Patinkin on "Nothing To Lose"), it is the least appealing of Madonna's albums at the start of the 90s, its musical potential sadly wasted and scattered in the wind.
"Vogue" will remain a delicious teaser off this unlikely collection, and was a nice surprise in the form of announcement for the film/album at the time when "Like a Prayer" still heavily dominated the charts, but the remaining part of this "music from/inspired by" sadly doesn't gel and sounds forced when it's not desperately leaning on the standards ("He's a Man", "Hanky Panky", "Now I'm Following You", "I'm Going Bananas", "Cry Baby", "Back In Business" and "More").
Curiosity won't kill the cat with this one, but the thrills are hardly there, if any.
