This album was one of the handful of Astralwerks CDs I listened to back in the early 2000s when I was little. The others being The Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim or Air.
I like most of the songs. The ones I like are "Romeo", "Jus 1 Kiss", "Where's Your Head At" and "Do Your Thing". "Jus 1 Kiss" has that loungey-ish vibe to it. I also like "Breakaway" and "Broken Dreams", even though the vocals on "Breakaway" sounds like an alien.
There are a few songs I find either average or annoying. And those songs are "SFM", "I Want U" and "Get Me Off". "Crazy Girl" and "All I Know" aren't too exciting as well.
But yeah, with the exception of a few songs, this is a good album that's less than a quarter century old now. B+ -
The Jaxx boys bring on Rooty, their second album, and it shares the same strengths as Remedy (catchy melodies, great hooks, infectious grooves) as well as the same weaknesses (aimless filler). “Romeo” and “Breakaway” start off the album on the right foot, only to be thrown way off course by “SFM” –- a pointless track. Things pick back up with “Jus 1 Kiss,” a bouncy, joyous song. The whole album seems to go like that: one or two great songs, followed by a not-so-good track (for instance, “Get Me Off” and “Where’s Your Head At” followed by “Crazy Girl”). Basement Jaxx are both eclectic (a good thing) and inconsistent (a bad thing). On the whole, though, the better songs bear repeated listens.
