Edited 7 years agoEarly Dream Theater which I hardly ever listened to (or late either) have often been accused of resembling Queensryche and Fates Warning, since I now was interested in their new drummer I also started listening to their old stuff, and bands that comes to mind is more in the style of Fates Warning as mentioned before but also Sieges Even and most of all Yngwie Malmsteens commercial period thrown together... (at its worst even reminiscent of Van Halens pop period which went on far too long with Sammy Hagar)
Those were the bands I listened to back in those days (we're talking 1989 and forwards to the grunge era up to mid 90s when other bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains beat them in interest keeping it fresh in a different progressive rock sound)
Not a bad debut, despite the album has a distinct demosound, but of course not as good as before mentioned early Fates Warning which are a totally unique experience or Sieges Evens 2 first and Watchtower who were among those bands who wrote the bible on these technical patterns...or Queensryches EP and 1st LP from 82 to 84 and Crimson Glory around 86 (which both had godly singers)...so I had already been listening to this sound for 5 years and more...
I always thought too little too late of this band but not bad at all...as good a rating from a Queensryche fan as it gets...
They were in the same situation as Lamb of God if you think about it, they can't help being in a later generation with supergroups like Slayer and Pantera already doing it for 20+ years
But DT came during the grunge era 5 years too late but still going strong today, but always a part of the 2nd generation of this type of bands which nowadays still produces new generations with skills, as it should be... (as long as they're not part of any bandwagon bands who are doing the same thing 10 years after like Pantera said "The Great Southern Trendkill" is needed then...)
Last song on the album I thought was a Rush cover (later Rush) but guess it's a kind of hommage of the style which is a good thing, at least 2 or 3 tracks on this one that is great for being from 1989...but as mentioned before I am always comparing them to Fates Warning & the whole genre as you would any fusion rock band...that's why the kinda new band OSI is a good thing.
