Having managed to get through the past few decades without hearing hardly a word about Anton Newcombe—with the exception of his brief, overhyped feud with the Dandy Warhols (could hardly miss it; I live in Portland, OR)—chose this LP as an introduction to BJM.
Enjoyed it quite a bit. Decided to check out Their Satanic Majesties' Second Request.
What a steaming load of crap. Embarrassing.
Any point in continuing? I mean, copping album titles from the Stones, then Bowie...um yeah. Think I've heard more than enough. -
Yes, most of the other BJM releases don't sound much like this, it is primarily shoegaze inspired (especially Chapterhouse / Slowdive / Ride to my ears!) rather than the Beatles / Byrds / Stones sound of later LP's.
However, this is hands down their best LP.
Great songs come one after another - there's consistency of quality and style, which makes this easily their best start to finish listen.
There maybe better songs on later LP's, but they are often surrounded by mediocre filler or cringeworthy mis-steps (sorry to be harsh, I'm a big fan but let's call a shovel a shovel).
The first side of this LP alone is worth the cash, banger after banger!
