Reviews

Of all the pseudo-genres that emerged in the second half of the 1990s, trip-hop was amongst those which clambered out of the petri dish and into the charts without record buyers having to draw too many dots. Although the Anglo-American quartet – whose hip has not altered since their 93’ formation – tended to bask in grungy sounds and self-deprecating lyrics, abjuring the rapacious rawness of Skunk Anansie and the dated dance-pop of Republica, the Wicked remix of Milk was bona fide trip-hop, A-listed by Radio 1 in the autumn of 96’, helping it into the Top 10. Owing much to Curve, they orchestrated their sound so cunningly that the feelings arising from the threnodies are almost angelic in their gracefulness.
