Anyone who lives (or has lived) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, probably knows about El Ateneo, a bookstore that also has CDs, DVDs, and pretty decent coffee. Housed in what used to be a theater, the entire building screams of art. In that mindset, surrounded by such beauty, you become more conscious of book covers, DVD covers, and album covers. Going down to where the CDs are, I was always taken aback by how much metal music, especially European metal music, was available. When it comes to CDs, I do judge them by the cover. The first time I saw the album art to Slaughter of the Soul, I knew I had to buy this album. It stood out amongst everything else.

At The Gates are behemoths of their genre. Slaughter of the Soul is raw, almost unapologetically. It's still a punch in the chest, though. Past the album cover being a work of art, the music itself is something any fan of the genre can enjoy and should listen to if they haven't. It's not one I can always listen to in its entirety, but the title track is always on one of my playlists.
