I can give you the all-time answer to what is the definitive Mellon Collie version. I have compared the original cd to the original vinyl with alternate tracking list to this one.
The worst sounding of them is the original vinyl (1996) which is muffled and veiled, the cd sounds better and more open, but this one outshines the cd with an even clearer presentation, more detail and air, more separation and more feel. So here you have the answer once and for all. The best sounding version is this one, my friends, either you got the 2012 or the 2014 repress, it is the same mastering, the definitive one. -
Edited 11 days agoI've only just read these reviews months after purchasing this from a record store in-person. To me it sounds really good - I can't distinguish the CD remaster and this although this expectedly sounds slightly warmer, and the presentation is beyond belief.
Edited to say it isn't super quiet on my copy, have tried to wet clean it multiple times but some ages have noticeable pops for me.

Edited 8 months agoPresentation is outstanding as everyone has already mentioned.
The mastering, however, is a different story. It’s compressed to death especially on LP 1 (which literally has all the hit loud tracks like Jellybelly and Zero). It gets better on the other discs but still quite underwhelming. The softer songs sound better tho (i.e 1979).
I found this box set for $45 CAD so I guess I am moderately happy. However, paying anything more than that is absolutely a waste only from an objective sonic quality.

Presentation and liner notes are incredible! Sonically, it’s fine. Silent. However it doesn’t hold a torch to the Siamese Dream pressing from 2011 (which is jaw dropping)! I’m grateful to finally have this but it doesn’t blow me away the way I hoped it would.

A well presented set with great sonic quality as well.
Liner notes, basically all by Billy, offer some great insights into the creation of this epic.
Great one for collectors and listeners alike. Recommend. -

This is a fantastic release. The packaging is , and both booklets are huge and made of very high-quality material. Thankfully, the records themselves sound mostly fantastic. I noticed a teensy bit of distortion during Farewell and Goodnight, but that was the extent of it. I got this for about $80 on Amazon, and thankfully the price didn't disappoint

this is the album that me and my dad blasted in the car when i was younger, i’ll forever treasure those memories. as for the pressing, fucking awesome. dead silent, and quite loud

Excellent pressing. No surface noise, best I've ever heard Mellon Collie. Packaging, box, book etc manufactured with care. This one is worth the dosh.

I got this as a gift for Xmas and I’m really pleased with the overall production and sound. Sound is great all around - fills the room nicely, very well balanced. Nice clears, smooth mids and the drums punch through it all nicely. The guitars are right where they need to be and wonderfully mixed.
Pressing is also very good. Just about zero surface noise on all 4 of my LPs. You can go right into the delicate songs and there is no campfire effect to tune out. Listening to the intro of “Porcelina of the Vast Ocean” as I write this review and zero surface noise…damn when those guitars and drums kick in!!! :)
Very nice job on this one - glad to add it to my collection.
