At some point in the early '90s during which my soul had still yet to be completely crushed and I had vigour, vehemence (+piss) in equal proportion, this wonderful, complicated, drug-addled (take a closer look at exactly how big Mr Reid's pupils are under such a bright light), classy, and [above-all] fucking noisy, beautiful recording (note the order) came to me from a black dude, waiting at a crossroad, somewhere in a deserted backwater of arid, wasteland America.
One of, perhaps, their lesser-loved works, but if you get it like they've "got it", once you put it on you know you'll not be pressing stop for 75 minutes.
From candy-sweet moments of wondrous, touching, whimsical openness like "Heat" + "Teenage Lust" , to openly enraged, frustrated energetic ranting and screaming of "Reverence" + "Snakedriver", this album sums up SO much of the majesty of The JAMC for me.
And when you think, for a second, you understand it, you suddenly don't understand it (unless you get it.) Their rendition of "Little Red Rooster" would shake Peter Murphy out his Maxell-chair and "Reverence" just full-on kicks you unrepentantly in the nuts.
"Write, Record, Release" + "Guitarman" add a hundred years worth of Mississippi Delta into the mix (showcasing their 12-bar blues vs. three-chord-indie roots).
MIDI-enabled-bar-location, wah-tremolo, way ahead of its' time in many ways, it is a thing of pure, filthy beauty, flicking the "V"s as it sneaks off for a piss round the back of Harrods....to over-extend a metaphor.
And then, of course, one of the lucky bastards goes & shacks up with Hope Sandoval.
Jesus...., one "...lucky son of a gun...."
"He was a degenerate's degenerate..."
