In the late 1980s were the American college circuit of The Throwing Muses one of the most important bands. They also reached that status overseas, by drawing at the leading uk label 4AD. Throwing Muses remained a real cult band, which never managed to break through to the general public but always retained a large cult following. In 1994 the frontwoman Kristin Hersh started a solo career, although the band continued to exist. Her first album Hips and Makers contained purely acoustic music & sold more copies than the entire oeuvre of the Muses, not least by the duet with R.E.M. singer Michael Stipe-Your Ghost. The songs of Hersh derive their light quixotic character including multiple personality disorder, where she suffers from. With her sultry vocals and hushed guitar sounds, occasionally supplemented by piano and violin, put them also her sixth album a unique atmosphere down.
