Alex Gifford and Will White were steeped in the sounds of classic film scores and free jazz. Their one and only LP (perhaps realising the sell-by date of the movement) was Decksandrumsandrockandroll, peaking at #6 in early 1998 and throwing disparate sounds at the mixing board to see what would stick, while lending a nod to their baton-wielding progenitors.

Even if best ed for their Top 10 James Bond medley and Top 20 Shirley Bassey collaboration – deeply unlikely yet masterfully executed – Take California touched the Top 75 in late 96’ (with OJ Simpson on the single cover, for reasons that weren’t immediately obvious) and set the template for the duo’s distinctive brand of dancefloor-centred big beat, expertly weaving instrumental samples, infectious basslines and hip hop turntablism.

It's taken me near on 30 years of coping ,seething, and overthinking the question of whether or not liking - if not flat out loving big beat music - and especially kitsch supposedly outdated goofy 90s bullshit big beat albums like this - is something I should do. And now, at the 30 year mark, I am fairly certain and happy to simply say "Decksandrumsandrockandroll" is a permanent, all time favorite record for me. Big beat fucking forever, and ver, and fucking ever bros.
