The cymbals have a bit of that compressed tinny sounding thing going on to my ears, bass not as pronounced, and overall sound-quality is nowhere near as good as the Track Record – MCA2-10004, MCA Records – MCA2-10004 https://www.discogs.sitioby.com/release/3348574-The-Who-Quadrophenia I also have. That said, the CD has the benefit of not having the problem of the dysfunctional runout groove on side 3 of the LP. It's very nice to not have to deal with the auto-coupled records. Also the miniaturized booklet is a faithfully well-done reproduction which I find extremely cool to look at and hold in hands. One of my favorite albums of all time so I am biased, but also able to be objective, hence only 4 stars for both the CD and LP versions currently in my possession. Now the album and the music itself is 5-star all the way, just need to find an LP version that I don't have to babysit when it gets to the end of side 3.

The story goes that in the mid-90s the Who's management began trying to sort out master tapes of the bulk of their classic catalog. During this time, they ran into a number of problems and the state of the tapes in the U.S. MCA Records vaults was a mess, so they decided to remix the bulk of the catalog from the multitracks. This version is what you get here. It also appears on a number of subsequent CD pressings and boxsets.
To cut to the chase, this remix sounds very "audiophile" and some of the murkiness of the original mix taken away in favor of spaciousness and clarity. Unfortunately the power of the original mix, in particular the guitars, sounds neutered. I can't say I prefer this mix at all, though people looking for a very "hi-fi" sounding version of the album will probably want this, as will hardcore Who collectors.
