Placebo – Without You I'm Nothing

Despite the legend status acquired from both ignorant radio and the fans, the subsequent discography the band displayed afterwards remains pretty much an useless testimony from the body work, an appendix not completely clean and all the time more inflammed. "Without you I´m nothing" continues to be undisputedly the "magnum opus" in where the band born and died in just one spot.

The stroke of genious dissapeared completely from there on and the reverberant and melodramatic pop demarked by a postmodern perspective of life and a very intimate consequence of personal angst became so apparent, transforming the consonance of a pop relative to life and experience into a cheap act of stereotyped mimics and adolescent failure.

Its rare to find some pop music that trascends the trivial or the mundane, and overcomes the cliché. But this is one of those cases in where a trio condensed the sum of a series of sentiments and ideas and musicalized them into an almost perfect conjunction. From the strong and ionated to the despaired and gloomy, all the time visiting the halls of melancholia with some sort of elegance that is both wild and obscure.

As usual sincerity and an uncompromised attitude was the key to achieve this success. To open the gap for expressing more intelligently what glam music should say in deep, to add the muscle of an untidy power pop and finishing the cake cover with intrepid arrangements, power chorded hooks, an overly solid drum set and all augmented with the flavour of catching chorus lines,in the end managed to assent an album with forgotten pop & rock sensibilities, in a time where the most radical pop to be heard was Robbie Williams. It was good, and to this day has matured pretty well, unfortunately it cannot be said the same about the band.

intensely eerie ballads. No doubt songwriting comes from a very personal space, making it a very special record for those who fall for it. Solid drumming throughout, last great Placebo album.
