A punch right into the face. Direct and violent as a shot in a furious mosh pit. Developing Cowboys from Hell intuitions, Pantera definitely walk away from classical thrash metal and compose an innovative tribute to the rage, with hardcore expressivity and metal heaviness. Phil Anselmo is a sort of Henry Rollins' heavy metal version: massive, imposing, physical. Dimebag guitar sound is compressed, solid, compact and - together with the enthralling combination of Vinnie Paul drums and Rex bass guitar - increases the value of the mammoth riffing. Before then, no heavy music had got such rhythmic dynamism, immediacy and groove, without losing aggression. An unrestrainable rolling stone: colossal in its mid tempos, devastating in its acceleration. A point of no return for heavy sounds. One of the most influent album of the nineties.
