Mr. Bad Example: I still spin my promo CD from my mall record store days and must say that Bernie Grundman’s mastering just blows that out of the water! This sounds great but…after listening to my OG Sentimental Hygiene it seems to lack the well balanced aggressiveness of his earlier pressings. Is this OG a DMM stamper? I’d love to compare but this may be the best it ever sounds which is still pretty fucking good.

First listen this is a great product, mastering and quality. I would like all of later Zevon’s albums reissued individually with similar treatment. Excellent!

Absolutely love this release. Fills the gap in Zevon on vinyl and sounds amazing. Highly recommended.

I'll edit my post as I continue to listen. Started with Mutineer. Flat, quiet vinyl. Cut a bit low in volume. However, I think the audio is excellent. It's not a superb recording and it is quite sparse. They did a very nice job mastering it. It sounds intimate and balanced. Vocals sound nice. I haven't compared directly to the CD. But the LP stands on its own as a worthy representation of the music.

Edited one month agoThis was unavailable in my area but was on my list, though I'm still scratching my head about this language on the hype sticker: "All Mastered Directly From Analog Tapes by Bernie Grundman". My CD of "Mr. Bad Example" is "AAD," so tapes exist, but perhaps not the master tapes. "Learning to Flinch" was "Recorded by Duncan Aldrich, live to DAT", stated on my CD. "Mutineer's" recording history (analogue, digital, both) is not stated on the liner notes to the CD, though the record was "Assembled and mixed at Devonshire Studios, North Hollywood, CA" and was "Mastered by Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering"; it's understood that Zevon digitally recorded much of "Mutineer" in his apartment.
Putting aside the slippery language on the Rhino hype sticker ("Original" is noticeably missing from the description of "Analog Tapes"), is there any improvement on the sound of "Mutineer" (which sounds, on certain songs, wobbly to my ears), and "Learning to Flinch" (an album that has Zevon's voice so buried in the mix on many songs). These are top notch songs, and I always wished they sounded better on my CDs (and cassettes, which I wore out). -
Edited one month agoI see the mention of the Czech Republic on the box, but these look like Optimal runouts
