While John Williams suffered no shortage of immediately recognizable and all-out decade-defining themes, the Superman theme is one of the tops of the tops. It is hard to think of a theme more intimately connected with its titular character (except perhaps Jaws). We are fortunately treated to a double LP score. The main themes are the most recognizable: Superman's theme, the "Krypton" theme, Lex Luthor's theme, and Lois Lane's theme. The remainder of the music is more incidental, and was written to give oomf and emphasis to the various scenes from the film. This is in contrast to a score like Star Wars, which was so theme-heavy. Regardless, it's still a good listen throughout, even if there are fewer pieces here to whistle to yourself afterwards. (And it's probably best to forget 'Can You Read My Mind' - don't worry, the composers were embarrassed by it as well, having no idea that Margot Kidder would be reading the lyrics in the recording.) I am affected somewhat by a lack of nostalgia for the movie. Though I saw it as a kid, I never did quite connect with it, as it was a movie I believe for more mature viewers. But I definitely get nostalgic vibes from the score, regardless if the movie wasn't a favourite at the time.
