I picked this up today out of curiosity to see if this new cut is any better than my original. The good news is that this Warren Defever cut is pretty good! Compared to Wes Garland’s original 2009, this is a bit fuller and has more presence. Both Alison and Jack’s vocals sit better and I noticed Jack’s cymbals to be not as washed out here vs the WG/NRP cut. Pretty great! Except….
The CD kills both of these, sadly. While it is quite dynamically compressed, it has much more extension up top, and better low end too. Jack’s sticks hit with better definition, LJ’s bass thumps. Let’s not forget Dean’s great synths and guitar tones - even fuller and more detailed on the CD vs the LP.
So as far as versions on vinyl, this is as good as it gets; but the CD is the winner here. Now, if only we could get a version somewhere with a bit less compression…. -
What does the runout information say on sides 1-3? I’m wondering, because I happen to have a test pressing of this album pressed by Third Man Pressing.
