Don't believe the hate, this record sounds killer. I was raised on this record and for vinyl I have the Kevin Gray remaster (which used to be my favorite version), a clean original early press which is decent, and of course I had the cassette and CD and I grew up on the 8 track in my old man's T-bird. I've listened to this record 5K times and at first play of this MoFi, I heard stuff I had never heard before in the mix (percussion, acoustic guitar parts, etc). This is final boss.

So many freakin’ armchair quarterbacks pretending to be audiophiles. This version kills. Super clean, pristine mastering. Nice thump on the bottom end and the highs are definitely not too much. It’s a full, glorious sound. I’ve heard all of them and nothing compares to this. If you’re a fan of this album, the buck stops here.

Edited 4 months agoI've had this from release (about a full year and a half), and I've played it maybe three or four times. Every time I put it on, I just feel the immediate need to take it right off. I love this album, and it's a real shame MoFi missed the mark so hard. While I wouldn't describe it as "bright", as a drummer the hi-hat is just too freaking loud and completely takes all life out of the music, and every time it hits it takes me out of the music. No, it's not my system as there isn't one other record I've had that sounds anything like this, including other MoFi's. This is the only record I've ever seriously considered selling. Also, it took two replacement copies to get it flat. Original was like a tsunami; first replacement was not that much better. Get the 2013 Bernie or Kevin cut. Don't even think about this.

Edited 6 months agoVinyl is dead quiet and packaging sublime (should be for $125+), but it’s bright compared to my 2009 Kevin Gray pressing which sounds full and beautiful. Glad I bought that back in the day, turns out it’s the best pressing of this album I’ve heard.

Edited 6 months agoWow. Lots of varying opinions on this one. I’ll throw in my $.02 as well.
Played this 4xs today. I then compared it to my 2017 B. Grandman master (r17536279) for comparison.
IMO I dont think it’s too bright or missing the mids. I have speakers that are known for being too high (Bowers & Wilkins) and the sound is clear, but not harsh in any way. I hear the mids coming in/out just fine and the bass (strings and kick) are very noticeable and balanced as well. What I didn’t see anyone compliment was the wonderful harmonics that come through on the chorus and vocals - amazing.
I compared this to r17536279 and there is no comparison. While that release was solid, this release is far better.
There are so many variables on playback that impact what’s good, what’s bad. This isn’t the best I’ve heard but it’s a solid, enjoyable listening experience. I’m glad I picked this up to add to my collection.
One thing to note that “could” be creating a different listening experience for me aside from my equipment, I am listening to a different variant (#3). -
After listening to this multiple times. I don't find it that bright as some have said. Seeing them live more than once they play bright live as well even in an arena the hi hat is definitely up front. Better than average pressing. Not the best sounding album I own . That's still Bruce Cockburn dancing in the dragons jaw CBS half speed. This is superior to most but maybe not the best. I'd love to see vmp and Ryan Sterling do it of an analog production of it. Sometimes people expect way too much. Price is demand not necessarily quality. My speakers are even bright and this is not fatigue by any stretch.

Edited 12 months agoThis release is horrible compared to pressings that go for much cheaper. Get a CB or Grundman cut instead. The EQ on this release favors the "audiophile treble detail" that MoFi has been going for. Very overblown high end and barely any life in the midrange.
-
Then why is so expensive, used one, Who is buying if is not good. Look at those $$$. My German copy is miles away from this pressing. Only this is shiny one.
-
Edited one year agoI change my mind. This is really not that good. I'm not sure what happened during the mastering, but it just sounds so weird. Lots of highs and lots of bass, but everything else is gone. The Bernie Grundman 2013 remaster sounds miles better.
-
This pressing is good though to my ears too bright. I've listened to several. The original US pressings sound dull. Call it relaxed or warm if you prefer but muffled is a different way of putting it. My favourite pressing, which finds a good balance between 'warmth' with 'presence' (and about half-way towards this pressing in of brightness) is the West German 1980s/90s (Discogs doesn't give an exact date).
