Another installment in the Disco Discharge series and this one contains some real crackers! I suggested "Cisselin Hot" by Chuck Cissel on a F.B thread many months ago...could this be why it showed up on here, in all its kinky, funky glory? DD prides itself on picking the less obvious tracks which for hardcore disco fans (like myself) is right on target. So how do I find the tracks I hear you asking? Well, I'll tell you.The first song that comes to mind is "You're The Fire" by Cissy Houston. This is just magnificent, moody, diva centric soul disco with fabulous keyboards and rhythm from Michael Zager. It is everything a disco record should be:exciting, delicious black vocals and gorgeous strings and orchestration."Holler" by John Davis and co is a nice little b side to "Love Magic" that is nice to own on cd since no cds of the magic man exist. It is quite a punchy little stomper."Why Must A Girl Like Me" by Claudja would fit in well on an arty transvestite road movie. Its very pleasant and has typical Salsoul instrumentation in the background...which is a good thing.Area Code 212's "Dukes Train" is a jazzy little number which grows on me each time I hear it.It gets quite funky at times."Love Dancing" by Marlena Shaw is sexy as hell and has an amazing break, this music is hottta..."the classic cruising cut "Like An Eagle" by Dennis Parker is here and it is as moody and sexy as ever.Although the wailing gets a bit much.Same goes for "Two Hot For Love" in its 12" version (the album version is about 15 minutes). It is hot but occasionally I find it overbearing."Space Bass", "Ritmo De Brazil", "One Love" by Slick, Ultimate and Celi Bee and the Buzzy Bunch respectively I already owned but I can assure you they are brilliant tracks, "Space Bass" is too cool for words.Wonder if "Sexy Cream" will show up on a future compilation...the entries from the 1979 vampire disco movie "Nocturna" are the glorious Gloria Gaynor song "Love Is Just A Heartbeat Away" in her dramatic soul style we all know and love and Vickie Sue Robinsons "Nighttime Fantasy" which I like but not love.Linda Cliffords opus "If My Friends Could See Me Now" is as showy as ever with some great string and horn work.Johnny Mathis "Begin The Beguine" is classy and I can imagine myself twirling on a beach with some gorgeous man...any volunteers??? The "Yester Me.." track from the Boystown Gang is a bit of a waste of time to me.I don't like 80s stuff as a rule (and with some exceptions) on disco compilations, and this just doesn't really warrant being on here.Double Discovery also are from the 80s with "Step On Out" which is quite a good Boris Midney track, much better than "Thanks For Loving Me" which was on an earlier DD compilation."Sunshine Hotel" by Richard T Bear, well HELL, this is a rock and rolling disco smash if ever I heard one, great energy and wah wah.E,W and Fires "Boogie Wonderland" is here in its 12" version but its the instrumental mix which takes a little getting used to, but upon listening you realise just how great this music is and how brilliant the original is...there is nothing wrong with commercial disco after all.And last but not least the sadly departed Teddy Pendergrass with "Life Is A Song Worth Singing". The lyrics to this are just so spot on, you will know when you listen and the vocals and instrumentation are great."Why don't you...sing it!" The liner notes are provided by Alan Jones who does a good job with his brief yet informative tidbits of disco information. So all in all, a very solid Disco Discharge collection that I am very happy with.I should mention all tracks appear in their 12" or extended album version with only a couple (Teddy,Ultimate and Double Discovery) coming in at (just) under 5 minutes.Good job! On Harmless.
