For what my hearing may be worth, it is past all doubt that the fifth installment of the Ancient Methods series is the best record of 2010. Three brilliant, scowling industrial techno monsters that are bound to make havoc in any club throughout the season.
A side packs a pumping epic piece of fiercely thundering techno. The rusty sudden key changes are an effective surprise some two minutes deep, while the subsequent medieval cathedral chants add a nice extra touch to the overall opaque Ancient Methods image. Halfway through watch out as all dark ornaments are dropped only to be replaced by vigorous and stomping 4x4 patterns with devastating echo in the percussion department.
Flip to side B, and the first track will flatten your entire body like a heavily used welcome mat. A robotized vocal snippet dropped over a sinister, shuffled electrocuted sequence and a throbbing kick. A smaller breakdown tones the intensity level down for a bit, as harsh industrial barks gain command, and then for the final minute one last onslaught of dance floor killing joy!
The last track may just be the winner, although you really can’t go wrong with anything here! First of all, it has the most tremendous, shake-the-crust-off-the-earth’s-core bass line I’ve heard used in techno in years, and I really do mean that. I just might start using this track as a speaker frequency response tool. Extremely dense, “world war” like percussion, with perforating sounds and a nasty hook which will riddle your body with a gimlet dipped in sulphoric acid. Bottom line with this one is: no guts no glory.
Well, Ancient Methods got enough of the first to take on the best of them by the dozens, and hopefully their impressive approach to techno will eventually grace them with enough of the latter as well.
P.S.: keep an eye out for the bonus disco groove going “party like it’s ‘99” placed in the run out groove of the A side. My two cents would be that this is definitely the best AM release so far.
