Frumpy – All Will Be Changed

Excellent first debut album from Frumpy. Simply outstanding and absolutely brilliant. I got the original plastic cover too on my copy. And i even got their two other releases.

I am a proud owner of the original LP with the original plastic covering. This is probably the most unusual packaging I have ever had. You pull the plastic to line up the arrows to where the plastic only covers up to the spine revealing that the tongue of the chameleon has been extended. My big complaint is I felt the plastic covering was wrapped a bit tight, making a bit difficult to pull.

Frumpy really never fit in your typical Krautrock, as they had that R&B influence and they show it too, while combining psychedelic, classical, prog, and jazz. Inga Rumpf herself could have easily ended up as a soul singer, and in fact, she was often referred to as a German Janis Joplin, except Inga's voice isn't so harsh. This is the original lineup with Inga Rumpf, keyboardist Jean Jacques Kravetz, bassist Karl-Heinz Schott, and drummer Carsten Bohn. Notice the lack of guitar. The lyrics seem right out of the late '60s hippie era, with liberal use of "groovy" and "sock it to me" (which means even the Germans caught on to those phrases, that is those who knew English, there were probably German equivalents). "Life Without Pain" seems, to me, inspired by Joe Cocker's version of "With A Little Help From My Friends", except this is an original (as is the rest of the album except for a cover of Ritchie Havens' "Indian Rope Man"). It has that similar soulful, gospel feel. The music itself has a hippie feel. Many people don't care for it, I can understand why, as it's pretty straightforward, if not a bit repetitious, but it ain't bad to me. But they really get adventurous with "Rosalie Part I"/"Otium"/"Rosalie Part II", to my ears is best listened together. It starts off in that bluesy, psychedelic manner, and then Kravetz gives some great use of Hammond organ. There are some unbelievable intense ages sure to blow you away. They do a cover of Richie Havens' "Indian Rope Man" (others, like Warm Dust, and Julie Driscoll with Brian Auger & the Trinity, amongst others had covered this song). Things get much more experimental with "Floating Part I"/"Baroque"/"Floating Part II". Many people are put off by the drum solo, but there's some strange organ ages, and classically-influenced ages too, even Mellotron, apparently a Mellotron M300 which was present at Phonogram Studios in Hilversum, Holland, where part of this album was recorded (this is the same studio that Earth & Fire and Eskeption had recorded, both used the M300). This is pretty underrated stuff I find highly enjoyable.
