Fun fact: How influential this epic track was in Disco/Dance music can also be inferred from the fact that in the Netherlands a radio programmed that contained an hour of a non-stop mix of Disco/Funk/Italo dance music was called "And The Beat Goes On".
BTW it was on a regular (governement subsidized) radio station, which was rather extraordinary at the time (1984 - 1985); a program with an hour long continuous music, only at the very end the names of the tracks were mentioned, and it was also mentioned that you could send a request to a postal address, which people actually did at the time...) -
Although millions of people all over the world have been getting down to "And the beat goes on", and although this is a great song and all-time classic, I want to take a minute here to talk about the flip side; "Can you do the boogie".
Written by Solar's main man Dick Griffey"s wife Carrie Lucas, this is a pur sang Disco track. It has everything to make a crowd scream and jump for more. I have played it a several occasions with the same response as ever. The variations, the break, the vocal arrangements, the uptempo verses, the bassline, oh my God, this song makes me shiver every single time.
First the bass line captures you, and then before you know, the lyrics; "All I wanna do, is have a party". Hey, I wanna have party too! "Now is the time, close your eyes, the night belongs to you". This song makes you just wanna go to the Disco.
It is a great party song, it is a tribute to a culture of going out and getting down. It is perfect. I love it.
