I was given this release as a xmas present from a mate. I have very little experience with QOTSA, but this pressing sounds very good. Super quiet, full of space and deserves to be cranked as loud as comfortable.
Looking forward to giving this a lot of play to get myself familiar with this band and this album.
Put through a full wash cycle then a full autocycle (wash and dry) on my HuminGuru before being played on a Pro-ject DC Evo with Ortofon 2M Blue, through the MM phono stage of the Cambridge Audio Evo 150, to my ears though a pair of Klipsch Heresy IV. -
For comparison between the 2011 2LP reissue and this one, written as I swap between them..
2011:
Larger soundstage, cleaner and louder in some ways but not by as much as I expected reading reviews of the '22 press. Obviously has the bonus tracks amidst the record somewhat changing the pace for people familiar with the original.
Sounds really really good but a little different from "how I it" and sometimes draws too much attention to little details, which doesn't feel like what the band were going for at the time. Still probably the definitive version for superfans.
2022 (this)
This brings me right back to when I first heard this record. Yes the soundstage is smaller than the 2LP but given the rough nature of this record the amount of soundstage (and clarity) on this single LP version is frankly a feat. And I prefer my fuzz music to melt into itself so to speak. Original tracklist of course.
Personally I think the bass is well matched to the mix/master and not lacking. Everything sounds punchy, dense, sweaty and dirty, to my ears that suits the album a little better.
OVERALL
while I don't have the first press to compare to, I have enjoyed the original mix of this record digitally. Between the two official reissues, I think which is nicer will come down to personal taste or purpose- for me this 2022 press will be my enjoyment copy, to hear the music more as it was intended, sing along, dance about the house etc.
and my 2011 will be for careful reference listening, hearing the b-sides on vinyl and such. -

Great release. Quiet, reasonably flat, clean. Recieved extra goodies: Qotsa collector cards and a thing that smells in the shape of Josh for in your car.
Did an a/b test with dt1990 against the (helaas) cd version on Qobuz. This vinyl version definitely and clearly sounds different and better. There is more room for the instruments. Noticeable wider stereo image. Clearer, more crisp but not like low end is missing. Best Buy this year especially for the money.
Love the artwork, and no worries: yes the obi covers the nippels and shows a censored version of the cover, but the cover itself shows them in all their glory.
I’ll have my Mexicola now. -
I'm way late to the party. I only ever knew the later releases of Queens Of The Stone Age but never their self titled debut. What a mistake! I'm glad I finally took the chance to hear this album on the occasion of this reissue. It's filled with highlights like Regular John, If Only, Mexicola, You Can't Quit Me Baby, and I Was A Teenage Hand Model. The sequencing is very good and in general the album leaves you open-mouthed in amazement. The pressing sounds incredibly good. It's really fun to play. Stereo is amazing. My cat always loves the effects at the end of side 2. I don't know what more to say. Amazing!

The sound of this release is superb. Very dynamic and punchy! Don’t hesitate to grab it.
And also I ordered it on amazon, got the trading cards bonus. Wonder if anybody also got the trading cards? -
Edited 2 years agoThin vinyl, phat sound. Killer tunes aside, the mix sounds fab - all instruments clear and punchy within a wide soundstage that fills the room like the lads were really there.
